I don't agree that he holds no loyality to Republicans. A lot of solid Republicans stood up for him when Bush threw him under the bus. He holds no loyality to Bush. Bush, as the last election proved, is not "the Republican party."

Lott strikes me as a career politician. Not too bright. Willing to say anything to anyone as long as he comes off as a nice guy, so as not endanger his position or his power.

Appointments like this only suggest to me that the powers-that-be don't see the problem or - more likely, that the powers-that-be ARE the problem. We need some new blood and some real conservatives in there who aren't afraid to open their mouths and have the guts to stand up to the lies and distortions of the MSM. Lott ain't that person.

Well, McConnell should tell him he's on probabtion and NO TV appearances!

About 20 years ago I remember seeing Lott on one of the Sunday shows and he was great, making his points effectively and with humor, and easily parrying the moderator's attacks.

That was then, this is now. 95% of the time Lott will say nothing objectionable or stupid; it's the other 5% that's a crap shoot. It's as if a tiny switch in his head gets stuck in the wrong position and makes his mouth say stupid things.

Regardless of what was said, or meant, it was incredibly beyond stupid. More than that was the incompetent way it was handled AFTER the comment. It showed clearly that Lott was just NOT ready for prime time. Add that to the incalculable harm he did with this little "powersharing" trick and everyone knew that Lott had to go.

True

The Assistant Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate (commonly called Senate Majority and Minority Whips) are the second-ranking members of their parties in the United States Senate.

The main function of the Majority and Minority Whips is to gather votes on major issues. Because he or she is the second ranking member of the Senate, if there is no floor leader present, the whip may become acting floor leader.

Before 1969, the official titles were Majority Whip and Minority Whip.

The current Assistant Majority Leader is Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

The current Assistant Minority Leader is Democrat Richard Durbin of Illinois.

I haven't followed every word on this thread by any means, but calling jveritas a political hack is ridiculous. He has done more for this country by translating Saddam's documents than 9/10ths of the freepers on any given thread.

It wasn't a stupid remark. But I agree that he handled it poorly. But it's hard to do well with the media jackels (and then your own party) at your throat.

But I agree that his other acts should have ruled him out. But he's still more of a conservative than Alexander. And who knows, maybe he's learned his lessons--though maybe not.

My real point in chiming in here is to point out that McConnell is the guy in control. And he's about as conservative as Ann Coulter. And he was elected unanimously.

But few people seem to have noticed that. Everyone wants to seize upon an excuse to throw up their hands and rent their garments.

Great story - thanks for sharing.

BTW, what exactly has Coleman done in the past 2 years?

I agree with the Senate vote in part. Based on his past performance, he is number two.

Seems some freepers would rather trash a true hero for his opinion than praise him for his considered opinion.

Has there been anyone more patriotic than jveritas. I doubt it. Can't think of another person on or off FR that comes close to the contributions this man has made to our national security.

Do you think McConnell will be the "leader" of minority party in the Senate? Do you think he'll be the one "whipping" Trent and McCain and the others cats? Or vice versa?

When McConnell can prove to me he has what it takes to control those losers and battle the Dems to a standstill THEN I'll be pleased.

For the record I think he's probably a nice guy. Mostly conservative, though I'm still ticked on his vote for the "subject that shall not be named".

But he doesn't inspire confidence, in me anyway, that he can herd the cats, block liberal policies, and do swift verbal warfare with his enemies. Kyl, Sessions, Thune...Steele? Santorum? He is not.

It's hard to be estactic about his elevation given I have doubts he's the REAL minority leader in the Senate with this election.

The reason Ensign pleases me is that he IS a conservative, he's competant, quick and he WILL have some say in recruitment and fundraising for new possible Republican Senatorial freshman. He can make a difference, I'll be shocked if McConnell does. IMO, McCain still runs the Rep side.

Well that's because, after six years of putting ourselves on the line day after day after day, without ever being told what was going on, we're pretty fed up.

We're sick of being treated like mushrooms. You can only do that to people so long before they finally say "fine, you're on your own".

I hear you again. But, you have to get real. Alot of folks pointed out that Lott was associated with the hated Gang of 14. Why? Because, it stuck it in Frists eye. It identified the RINOs and placed them on a shelf by themselves and made them targets.

It wouldn't be to far to speculate that Lott is the author of this current defeat. But, now the guy is back in power. In the spot he is most skilled and comfortable with.

As the folks from Mississippi decided to send him back, he could be causing alot more trouble as an outsider than enforcing Mitch McConnell's positions.

The Republican caucus know who this guy is, they just decided he handed Alexander his tail.

However, the gang of 14 is the past. The remaining Gang members will note how their compadre's did in this last election, and Lott will not help them anymore because they will only serve to humiliate himself from now on.

Hence, the Senate will be filibuster capable. Nothing will happen in Senate that McConnell doesn't want to happen. This is as good as it can get.

If Lott was on outside.. a Gang of 10 would be enough to eviscerate any hope of containing the Dems.
