Every day, I'm asked whom I'm supporting for President in 2008. I've looked over the potential candidates, and on the Republican side, I believe the best, by far, is Rudy Giuliani, who took the first step toward a run, yesterday, with an exploratory committee.
(On the Democratic side, the best guy who's been talked about as a Presidential contender is Senator Evan Bayh from Indiana, who truly understands the Islamic threat and is a more moderate Democrat--which is why he'll never get the nomination.)
Yes, I'm pro-life and against gay rights, where Giuliani shares neither of my views on these issues. But, to me, the terrorism issue is far more important, #1 on the list. Right now, we have a President who is pro-life, against gay rights, and pretends to be the "Counterterrorism Prez." But, actually, he's done nothing substantive on any of these issues.

So, I'll take the guy who I know will have the guts to do what Bush does not. I believe Giuliani is that man. He's proven that time and again, whether it was when he told terror-supporting Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal to take his $10 million and shove it (right after 9/11) or when he severely restricted Yasser Arafat's travel in New York (kicking him out of a concert).
A man who will do those things vs. Bush PC on Islam is the man we need to run this country. He's probably also the man who can handle the illegal alien problem and actually see to it that something is done about it. Not sure on his position on guest workers, but we'll soon enough find out.
It will be a difficult matter for a pro-choice, pro-gay rights candidate (and, again, I oppose Giuliani on these issues) to get the GOP nomination. We'll see.
So for those who want to know who I'm supporting for Prez, I say, "Viva Rudy." America's Mayor has what it takes to be America's President.

AC, I hear what you are saying, but unless we unknowingly cloned Reagan, these are gonna be the choices. I think most of us agree that McCain is unacceptable. The strongest conservatives got punched in the mouth last week. You can throw names like Newt and Santorum around all you want, but you will see that the majority of voters, who vote their "gut", already have made a judgment about them.
When Reagan ran in 80, he had already been a candidate in 68 and 76. By then, he had support, money, following, and media attention. It's AWFULLY HARD to gin that up quickly if you don't already have that by now.
It's late in the game here. There are only a few people who can take on Hillary. Many are ready to not just elect her, but anoint her.
These are the choices. Where will you stand in Nov of 08? That's all I'm saying.
I really wasn't trying to offend anyone. I just believe that that IS the reason why we have lost our great and good Senator Santorum; he knows how to and he does stand up for that which is right...every time. I'm still trying to get over the loss!

Wow. I love Rudy but um...the President has definitely done something substantive. Patriot Act? Iraq? Afghanistan? Reforming DoD? All of those aren't substantive?

When we had Clinton in the White House we had a slick-talking &^%$*&er with no foundational beliefs. So we elected someone with foundational beliefs but obviously not slick-talking. There are drawbacks to both, which points out that we shouldn't be electing somebody just because they contrast with the personality that was there before. It might be well to have someone who can produce his own political advice without a braintrust talking in his ear all the time, but that is a contrast again.
It's a good thing you were not in the decision loop when Truman decided to drop the big ones.
You presume Giulliani's America is civilized. They made the same kind of mistake in Germany in the 30's. (And yes, I'm equating mass abortion with other mass murder.)

I am starting to have my doubts about that.
Two suggestions for Rudy; 1) Come out against partial birth abortion 2)Declare he's not against gun rights for law abiding citizens.
So constitutional government at home - limited government the way our Founders intended and the way Goldwater, Reagan and other great conservatives fought for - is of no interest to you? Sorry, that's not my idea of being a conservative. We want national security, no question. We also want a nation worth securing - i.e. one that is true to its constitutional principles and one that guarantees liberty and free markets at home. At least that's what I'm looking for in a candidate.
I am not starting. I always doubt those who aspire or reach high office. Skeptical, but we can only judge what actually transpires. Benefit of doubt. Even now I still give benefit of doubt to Dubya. He is in a tough position and of those who think they could step in now and fix things--take another look.
I hated to see him go as well. I really liked him. A great and dynamic politician. But I think he really hurt himself on that Shiavo deal.
I do believe we haven't yet seen the last of him. He could even come back to run for president if he plays his cards right. Nixon came back from the dead to become a two term president. Santorum is still a young man. He now has to build his political chits to call in when necessary.
Truman's actions were appropriate and saved not only American lives but Japanese.
However, this war is not of that nature and there is no targets which could be hit and have the same effect.
Using a hammer to kill gnats does not make much sense or work very well.
If you have no alternative you cannot win.
