The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is conducting a three-year research project into the beneficiation of biodiesel by-products, which could have economic spin-offs for rural agricultural communities.
CSIR Biosciences executive director Dr Gat-sha Mazithulela tells Engineering News that the project involves investigating how biodiesel by-products can be used in animal feed and other value-added products.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is funding the project, after a DST- driven committee on biodiesel identified the need to ensure that the contribution of by-products to the economic viability of biodiesel is maintained and improved. The committee then tasked the CSIR, in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), to prepare a research plan and proposal on value addition to the by-products of biodiesel production. The main objective of the research is to improve the nutritional value of oilcake, thereby increasing its inclusion levels in animal feed, and in pig and poultry diets and in fish food.
Animal feed trials and related research will be done in collaboration with the ARC.
Research will also be conducted into the possible future use of oilcake in applications other than animal feed, such as chemicals and cosmetics. Another objective of the research is to increase the economic viability of biodiesel and create manufacturing industries in semiurban and rural areas.
Research on value addition to the soya bean oilcake will require investigation into other areas, such as the dehulling process, the type of oil produced, variability in raw materials and selection and type of oilseed.
Sunflower and soy are the two main bio- diesel crops that are being studied. Mazithulela says that the project will take
Rest in Peace, old friend, your work is finished.......
If you want on or off the DIESEL "KNOCK" LIST just FReepmail me........
This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days......
Oil Cake........
Sounds yummy.........
SOYLENT GREEN! IT'S PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My god!
It is!
Have they figured out what to do with all the glycerin from soy based diesel? I missed it if they've announced a new use for it other than cosmetics or soap.
Cosmetics, soap, explosives...........
Benefication!? The author should be flayed alive and dipped in fire ants for polluting the English language like that.
LOL!!.......
Those are existing uses. We're going to need NEW uses with all the additional glycerin coming on line from the Soy to Diesel process.
