It is tragic that America allows affirmative action. I won't criticize Mr King. I do find his heirs (family and activists) to be lesser men then he. Especially his greedy family, which bans use of his speeches except for commercials. Jesse is a sleaze, as is "Rev" Al and Andy Young.

The pic I posted was from AOL. They had 8 in their slideshow. It was the one closest to the one I see when I get my AOL Welcome screen.

How can GW as well as his father stand next to a rapist? Beyond words.

"Jesse, there's a camera -- pick up your hanky, quick!"

when you have nothing else to trade with, you can always appeal to sheer emotion (or at least the pretense of it).

It's called "showing respect for the office."

It's something that honorable people do. Honorable people honor others at whatever point honor is due -- and honor is due the office of President.

Martin Luther King was a great man. He placed himself in great danger to stand up for what he believed in. Those of you on this site who can't understand or appreciate that, play right into the hands of those who feel conservatives are racist or insensitive. I guess some people can't stand the thought of a black man receiving a great honor.

Well said.

I will also add a comment that the President's father made in his interview with Greta last night. People keep going on about his recent ties with Bill Clinton but he pointed out this is not the first time that he had worked with him. He said that he got to know him fairly well many years ago when Clinton was Arkansas govenor when as President was putting together some Bill on literacy.

In politics as all walks of life we have to work with people that there are many aspects of their life we may not agree with but we have to respect their position/office. Furthermore we have to focus on the postive parts of their life. Though I agree with what most people say about Bill Clinton even he has qualities and skills that can be used for good.

hear, hear. Thank you.

It's a form of "rule of law." maybe it could be called "rule of dignity" or "rule of good manners" (I guess it would take a Brit to really understand good manners -- all I can do is sort of admire them from afar).

When those laws are abandoned, civilization ceases to be 'civil' -- which, by extention, means....

Did you hear about the radio ad that Lewis, Andy Young, and Shirley Franklin (Atlanta mayor) did, for the Fulton County Commission Chairman race?

It's one of the nastiest race-baiting pieces of crap you've ever heard.

Here's the text:

"This is Congressman John Lewis."

"And I'm Mayor Shirley Franklin"

"And I'm Andy Young"

(John Lewis) "On November 7th we face the most dangerous situation we ever have. If you think fighting off dogs and water hoses in the sixties was bad, imagine if we sit idly by and let the right-wing Republicans take control of the Fulton County Commision."

(Shirley Franklin) "The efforts of Martin and Coretta King, Hosea Williams, Maynard Jackson and many others will be lost. That's why we must stand up and we must turn out the vote for the Democrats on Election Day."

(Andy Young) "And especially for John Eaves for Fulton County Commission Chairman. Unless you want them to turn back the clock on equal rights and human rights and economic opportunity for all of us, vote for John Eaves as Fulton County Chairman"

(Lewis) "Your very life may depend on it."

(John Eaves) "This message paid for by the committee to elect John Eaves."

I just looked, and it's still on the guy's site.

I was particularly disappointed in Franklin's involvement in this. I had a fair amount of respect for her, prior to this. The other two, I'd already written off.

What made MLK a great man? Why does he deserve a holiday in his honor? Why does every city name their crack-distribution center for him?

$10 million of the projected $100 million is to be taxpayer money. I say "projected" because it IS being built in D.C. and we should expect only minority, union shop contractors. The change orders and cost overruns will be tremendous, and I can only hope the geniuses that we pay to represent us aren't shamed into upping the public's contribution to this boondoggle.

The people in charge of raising the difference between OUR $10 million and the final cost should tap Slick Willie for a major chunk of the dough. He is, afterall, the nation's first black POTUS, and no doubt has the money stashed in some off-shore account.
