A mother’s diet can change the behaviour of a specific gene for at least two subsequent generations, a new study demonstrates for the first time.

Feeding mice an enriched diet during pregnancy silenced a gene for light fur in their pups. And even though these pups ate a standard, un-enriched diet, the gene remained less active in their subsequent offspring.

The findings could help explain the curious results from recent studies of human populations – including one showing that the grandchildren of well-fed Swedes had a greater risk of diabetes.

The new mouse experiment lends support to the idea that we inherit not only our genes from our parents, but also a set of instructions that tell the genes when to become active. These instructions appear to be passed on through “epigenetic” changes to DNA – genes can be activated or silenced according to the chemical groups that are added onto them.

Gene silencer

David Martin at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute in California, US, and colleagues used a special strain of genetically identical mice with an overactive version of a gene that influences fur colour. Mice with the AVY version of this gene generally have golden fur.

Well from one grandma, I'm roast beef, boiled potatoes, and lots and lots of "afters" as grandma used to call her after meal snacks. The other grandma, moonshine. Anyway, I'm glad I know I can blame more people for any problems I might have.

Hmmm.

This would indicate that it is very possible that eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil really did cause death to enter Adam and Eve and their offspring.

Mainstream science takes another hit. The Bible is shown accurate once again.

Another hint that the crude "Darwinian" scheme is false. Some day Lamarck will be rehabilitated, mark my words.

I think we're related.
Just add some sausage gravy, biscuits, mashed potatoes, dumplings and grits.

One Grannie, a herring choker, potatoes and salt cod fried in bacon grease, the second Grannie could make fried poop taste good, the first 98 the second 76.

"Some day Lamarck will be rehabilitated, mark my words."
Then go directly to proletarian Michurinite theory and cut the intermediate crap.

Dear Sir. Lamarck developed his theory long before Michurin and before Darwin. And Darwin repeated several Lamarck ideas.

You cannot claim that Darwin was more right than Lamarck in matters of inheritance because the genetics was developed AFTER Darwin.

Science is moving and we get more and more evidence against crude scheme of random mutations followed by inefficient selection. The movement of genetic information is not unidirectional (retroviruses demonstrate it), is not restricted to one species (genes can be shared/distributed), and DNA is not a master but rather a servant (selectively used like a library by a living organism). We know only a fragment of this amazing design.

Crude Free Market scheme of random mutations is not any better than "proletarian Michurinite theory". It is equally unscientific and equally ideological.

"Mainstream science takes another hit. The Bible is shown accurate once again."

And thus, we have more scientific proof that science is wrong.

I love it when philosophers go "poof" and disappear.
