Nation's largest biodiesel plant breaks ground in W. Wash.

he recent pouring of the foundation for the nation's largest biodiesel plant at the Port of Grays Harbor, Wash., was cause for celebration for many people and for many reasons.

"We stand here today to celebrate not just the foundation of a physical plant, but the foundation of an entire movement - a movement away from our dependence on foreign oil toward reliance on renewable, home-grown biofuels," said John Plaza, founder and president of Imperium Renewables.

The new plant, Imperium Grays Harbor, will produce up to 100 million gallons of biodiesel, mainly from soybean, canola oil and other extracts.

The 12.5-acre facility is capable of storing up to 24 million gallons of biodiesel and feedstocks at any one time.

Once Imperium is up and running in mid-2007, it will be the largest biodiesel production plant in the nation.

Imperium plans to use a wide variety of oils, some of it from canola grown in Washington state. Plaza said he hopes to see the company become the single largest purchaser of canola in the state.

In an earlier interview with Capital Press, Plaza said Washington growers will be in a good position to grow oilseed crops for the plant.

"Their farms are close to our facility, and the transportation expenses that can be saved because of that proximity gives them an edge," he said.

Even so, he predicts that it will take five to 10 years for Washington growers to grow enough feedstock for his plant.

The state currently has about 7,000 acres in canola, and Plaza estimated it would take 800,000 acres of canola to feed the biodiesel plant.

Plaza was also blunt about his company's need to be competitive when it comes to prices it pays to suppliers, pointing out that Imperium is competing with petroleum.

And while Plaza knows that many farmers are apprehensive about putting a crop into the ground, not knowing whether it will pay off, he said there's a "risk in every new venture."

Imperium is the first U.S. biodiesel company backed by venture capital firms. Plaza said the company is also investigating plants at four other locations in the U.S., but he would not disclose which states were under consideration.

About 1500 such plants could replace our thirst for gasoline. Providing that 1.2 trillion acres of cannola were available.

My 2 cents:

Diesel glow plugs are not a replacement for gas spark plugs. They a don't perform the same function.

They are not related to the same function whatsoever.

The analogy was that sparkplugs aren't needed anymore because diesel engines are now going to replace the "need" for sparkplugs with "need" of glowplugs........

Whoa..... Hold on.

Where's the 67,000 lawsuits filed by the eco-nazis demanding impact studies on the sex life of the 'Cross-Eyed 3 Legged Green Newt' and the 'Grays Harbor Leaping Sand Flea', which are native to the area and will be effected by this plant?

So back off bulldozers - we are goin to court bunky! Come back in 2085 when the lawsuits are settled, then maybe, you can fire up them dozers.

Huh, what? No lawsuits for a Biodeisel Plant? Come on..... /s

I hear that they decided not to sue because the government agreed to pay for the relocation of 10 billion Gray's Harbour Leaping Land Fleas to Western Montana, where they are also native.

I got behind an old mercedes with a "War-Free Biodiesel Fueled" bumper-sticker the other day, and the smell made me want to wretch. I thought these things were supposed to smell like french-fries when they ran! This hippie-hauler smelled like a burning Birkenstock. Just say no.

The exhaust will smell like the source of the fuel. If it is recycled "french-fry oil" then yes, it smells like FF. If it came from fish oils, or animal fats, well, you got the picture..........

There is certainly potential for environmental activism. But given the economy in that part of the state, I seriously doubt they would be successful.

And the folks on the east side of the Cascades will love it to death. One heck of alot of acreage in eastern Washington.
