Will Hillary run? That depends on a bigger question: Can she win? In the next month, New York's junior senator will embark on the most monumental, emotional gut-check of her life - and weigh whether she thinks she can win the White House.
Then, not too far into 2007, she will make her intentions known.
"She has to wait until she's made a decision and it's a decision she's comfortable with," said Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf, who supports Clinton.
Getting comfortable could be hard, and some of her closest political allies hope she resists the urge. But a lot has been going her way lately.
Democrats proved last week they can win in red states, taking Senate seats, House seats and governor's mansions. Would-be Hillary slayer Mark Warner, Virginia's former governor, has dropped out of 2008 contention, and 2004 nominee John Kerry shot himself in the foot with a flubbed joke.
Poll numbers on matchups with top GOP rivals John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have improved to statistical ties or slight leads for her.
A Newsweek poll released yesterday found 53% of those surveyed said there's a chance they'd vote for her - virtually identical to McCain and Giuliani. And while many Americans see her as a polarizing figure, the key issue of whether they think she can win is trending up. A recent Gallup poll found 57% of Democrats say she could win it all.

Oh, please. This is from the vaunted NY press. It's a wonder these guys can write anything about Her Heinous while they're genuflecting.
She's running. The only thing she has to think about is how much chum to throw in the water to get our side to bite early. The Klintoon playbook is all about inoculation, and the thing they want most is for bad information to come out sooner rather than later so they can massage it with their minions in the media and then use their stock phrase, "old news."
They're already preparing the waters in this article with these chum chunks: "Clintons' complicated private life...Any new hint of infidelity by Bill...bad memories of Monica Lewinsky and Ken Starr." They know stories about Billdo always put Her Heinous in sympathy for suffering over his indiscretions while allowing them to talk about Republican invasions into private lives. And who gets worse press about Ken Starr, Democrats or Republicans?
The way to defeat Her Heinous is to call her exactly what she is: a hardline leftist whose policies would make Lenin and Stalin proud. She's given us plenty to work with on that score: socialized healthcare with prison terms for seeking private care, unflagging support for all abortions including partial birth infanticide, and her not famous enough "take away things for the common good" statement.
The Allen-Webb race is the example of what happens when Republicans play the dirt game instead of the issues game. Now yes, the Washington media made it their mission to go hard after Allen, and he didn't help himself by apologizing for foolish things, but in the end, the issues in the campaign disappeared in favor of the dirt. Republicans usually lose dirtfests because it makes them look like hypocrites.
You don't want to get into a dirtfest with Hellary Klintoon where she can go on Oprah and cry about Billdo. You want to pound her unmercifully on being a leftist. Make her answer philosophical questions about policies. Simply calling her a leftist is not enough, you have to call her it and explain why.
For years now, the RATS and the DBM have done an extremely good job of conditioning people that conservative means right-wing extremist of the most evil variety. It's long overdue to defend ourselves and go hard after the leftists like Her Heinous and her buddies Pelosi, Rangel, Durbin and Kennedy. If she's running as we all expect, let's engage her on the issues and bring in the dirt where it's necessary, not make the dirt the main thrust no matter how inviting it is with the Arkansas Grifters who truly should be disqualified just on the dirt.
The same economic conditions can justify either story, of course. But the MSM will have to manufacture a positive spin to enhance Her Thighness' credibility on economic issues.
Don't be rediculous! The cool-aid drinkers have given her an ego the size of Jupiter. She will run.
Yes, she will run but she can only get 40% or so of the vote (Bill never got 50%). The nightmare scenario is that McCain will run as a 3rd party candidate and Hillary wins with her 40%.
I'm not to sure she will make that 'first president' thing; the way the things are stacking up in the House and Senate, I would say that Missus Pelosi will be doing that....
Now what will be interesting to watch, is what happens to Missus Pelosi when Missus Clinton finally figures out what is going on....Missus Clinton might be billed as the smartest woman in the world, but I think she's minus a few hamburgers short a happy meal....
The Presidency for the RATS goes through the Kennedy's.
As powerful as the Clinton Machine is, the Kennedy's have been the power brokers for generations. Kerry was Kennedy's boy.
And let's not forget the Gore's.
2008 is going to be a war for the Democrat nomination.
There are a lot of Democrat activists, including the nutroots, who really hate the Clintons. They are going to get behind Tom Vilsack for President. Looking at the Democratic calendar, it is hard to see where Hillary wins her first caucus or primary.
The battlegrounds in 2008 are going to be the same states they were in 2004 - Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the upper Midwest. A moderate Republican candidate who can paint Hillary into a leftwing corner can win those states. A harcdore conservative will lose everything but the South, even to Hillary.
Not on a bet. Hillary came out of that debacle smelling like a rose, even garnering a Senate seat in one of the most important states in the nation. People sympathized with her as she stoically "stood by her man". Hillary would welcome a redux of the Lewinsky situation. That's when she was the most admired and popular.

Step ONE for all of us...
Next year, register as a Democrat, then vote for anyone-but-hillary in the Primaries.
Bubba should watch his back.
From your lips to God's ears, but I disagree.
Word to everything you said!
My only quibble is this: Repubs lose dirtfests b/c Repubs are put off by dirt on their guy and Rats are not put off by dirt on their guy.
I've also been thinking about the Pelosi factor. Seems to me that Pelosi and MRS BILL CLINTON in the same national picture ought to just scream out "overload" to the American people.
I certainly think it should, but then you have people like babs striesland and alex baldwin..and then you wonder what type of people would vote for these scum bags....guess all we have to do is look to hollywierd and we know....
Have you been hearing good old rosey odonnell lately? I don't listen to her, but my neighbor thinks she walks on water, I guess she is downing our President in every other word, and she's so happy that we republicans are no longer in office....with help like that from her, Missus Pelosi and Missus Clinton can go a long ways....
In order to win the support of the left wingers than dominate her party base she will have to pander to their positions...immediate withdrawl from Iraq, shrink the US military and turn US security in the war on terror over to the UN and law enforcement. That's not going to play well in the heartland of America.
Upstate should become its own state. Then its ruin won't be New York City's problem. It would be like a second Ohio.
...'ol Rosie has trouble walking on a cement sidewalk without caving it in, much less on water...
