Sen. John McCain, considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, party officials said Friday.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.
McCain, the Republican maverick who unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination in 2000, already has opened a bank account for the committee, officials said.
"The senator has made no decision about running for president," said Eileen McMenamin, a McCain spokeswoman.
Aides to McCain say the senator will discuss a presidential bid with his family over the end-of-the-year Christmas holiday.
McCain, 70, is a former U.S. Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and served in the House of Representatives for four years before that.

Me neither.
Ditto
NO GO!
AAAGGGGGHHHH!
Not another McCain for POTUS thread. XD
McCain certainly contributed to the Republican loss with his gang of 14...he also prevented conservative judges from making it to the bench. He is also against tax cuts. Rino piece of...you know what if you ask me.
No way. No time. No how.
He's got my vote. I don't want Frist nor the others unless its Condi or General Powell.
Thanks
Huge ego/opportunist!
He could START by helping our POW and MIA families that he's snubbed and betrayed....
I sure second that statement.
"considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination"
BY WHO???
He was born in the Panama Canal Zone. I think he should run for president of Panama.
Can't trust him. Very little difference between him and a liberal.
Isn't 72 a bit old to start out as President? Hell, he'd be 80 by the end of his second term. And those years in a POW camp couldn't have extended his lifespan. How old was Reagan when he became President?
I'd rather vote for Rudy. McCain won't get our support.
NO McPain. No, No, No, No, etc., and so forth and so on.
NO MORE RINO'S PERIOD.
Ok, here is my unbiased poll on McCain:
Would you be for or against the turncoat anti first amendment John McCain or would you rather vote for a real conservative?
a) Not only against, but hell no on McCaine
b) I'll go with the conservative please
