I don't accept the premise of the title of this piece. Conservatives as a whole did not lose here. Republicans did. Conservatives have suffered a setback, but nothing that can't be overcome.

Unfortunately, character only applies to conservatives. Liberals can be completely bereft of character, and their sycophants will always rally to their defense.

Colson, what a self-righteous dope. By his logic America should have stood down in WWII. After all the Nazis may have been murdering people by the millions, but after all, we had Jim Crow laws in the South. Who were we to speak of the morality of racial equality?
Sheesh! Fools like Colson are going to get us all killed.

I don't think that Mark Foley caused this election result.

Conservatives didn't "lose". Conservatives have suffered a painful but necessary amputation of putrid flesh. We will have to wait and see if we need to cut out more.

You don't have to apologize for being a conservative, Chuck. Cunningham and Ney are thieves and Foley is a pedophile. Greed and lust know no party. I agree now is a brief time for soul-searching. In my case, never again will I assume a Republican leader shares my values or concerns. I will vote for some of them, but I will never trust them. That's what conservatism is all about: creating institutions that can minimize human weakness rather than allowing it to flourish. That's why our system divides and shares powers.

100% wrong. Conservative did not lose. And liberals did not win.
Swing voters voted democrat.
That's. All. She. Wrote.

Conservatives lost because they deserved to. They failed to live up to the high standards of personal behavior they preach about. And that's what brought them down.Bullshit. Conservatives didn't lose, Republicans did. As well they should have. When they figure this out, maybe it will finally turn out right.

I agree with Chuck's eloquent words about morality and character, but what beat us, conservatives AND republicans, was the old MSM. If the Dems had conducted the same Iraq war as Bush and Rumsfeld have the MSM would say it was the most brilliant, successful, and moral war in our history. And so on. The media swung the vote at least 15 points to the left.

The answer is one that may startle you. Conservatives lost because they deserved to. They failed to live up to the high standards of personal behavior they preach about. And that's what brought them down. High standards. Great idea. Let's throw out all the ex-felons and disbarred lawyers. We don't really need that kind as conservative leaders...

In short, conservatives can fall on their own petards; but liberals, having no identifiable moral scruples, thus have no petards to fall on.

I think he is exaggerating only one aspect of the problem. A huge problem was a lack of leadership in being able to herd the cats and the fact there were virtually no Republicans in Congress capable of speaking and persuading people.

Or, we drop the notion of who is the biggest loser, conservatives or republicans (that will sort itself) and accept the fact that roughly just over half of the population of this great nation is relatively intellectually benign proved by any reasonable doubt as Gore won the popular vote in 2000.
Over half the nation is a parade of dolts. The question is best how to deal with the dolt factor. Clearly conservatives have an edge as too many pubs have crossed the line into doltness.
