IMHO, Newt Gingrich won't be elected President, but he is far and away the best choice for the post of top Republican strategist. Whether this is in the RNC or somewhere else, I don't know.
He needs to call the shots in 2008 while maintaining a low public profile. He can be the true "architect" of conservative victory once more. He led us to victory in 1994. He can do so again in 2008.
Gingrich should be to Romney what Rove is to Bush.
I don't believe Romney is more conservative than he shows....in fact I believe he is flat out moderate like McCain and Guiliani.
Newt is a coward and an asshole:
when last elected to the House, he immediately resigned, leaving the then-Dimocrat governor of Georgia to name a - surprise, surprise! - Dimocrat to take his place.
He took campaign money and votes from his constituents and left them in the lurch without so much as an apology, contenting himself with doing the talk-show circuit.
I don't think removing Rummy during the election cycle would have done any good. The terrorists in Iraqi would feel emboldened to step up their October murder spree. Also the rATS could say, "See, the Bush Doctrine is a failure."
I am beginning to think so too. Gingrich is an asset as a background person, but I think his baggage will bar him from being elected president. Like it or not, how he conducted himself during his two prior marriages (the second of which was during his middle age) will be seen as indicative of his character.
I am not completely sold on Romney, and I do think that his Mormon religion will turn off some voters. Nevertheless, he appears to be the best candidate out there so far. Plenty of time for someone else to emerge however, and as all of us learned this week, a lot can happen in two years.
This link shows his positions from an ACLU point of view. This liberal didn't like him either. Page 2 shows John McCain. Page 3 is Pataki. Romney looks OK based on this.
Gun control? Yeah, he was in MA and implemented an assault rifle ban. I think it's amazing he is as conservative as he is and elected in MA. I like what I see so far.

Well, I much prefer a conservative over a Republican, to be quite precise. Nothing else is acceptable and while I don't agree with your total assessment of Newt, show me a better conservative, patriotic, non-liberal candidate....and I will vote for him. And I also do not agree he is not electable. If he (or any other qualified candidate) stands and FIGHTS FROM A CONSERVATIVE POSITION and nails the libs for what they are -- they can win.
This is where the Repubs failed us -- they did not fight, and they were not conservative. They signed their own death sentence. As such, the libs won NOTHING, and did nothing because they have no advertisable platform. The Repubs gave them the contest.
Old tired trite mantra buzzward.
He put together a very important concept in the early 1990s. Do you know what it is?
Ditto to that !!!
Been out of town. Where is that stupid bastard Rove?
Ditto that.
He has "TOO MUCH BAGGAGE." didn't you hear? (barf)
Who is a RINO?
Thanks for the link!
Mitt Romney
Abortion and Birth Control:
* Opposes Roe v. Wade.
* Believes that abortion should be banned in all cases except rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.
* Vetoed an emergency contraception bill in July 2005.
However:
+ Has kept campaign promise not to tamper with state abortion laws.
+ Said in 1994: "I had a dear, close family relative that was very close to me who passed away from an illegal abortion ... [W]e will not force our beliefs on others on [abortion]. And you will not see me wavering on that." Romney has in fact wavered on that, but probably more out of political expediency than anything else.
Death Penalty:
* Made a quixotic attempt to reinstate the Massachusetts death penalty in 2005.
Gay Rights:
* Has used strong anti-gay rhetoric in recent years in an apparent effort to distance himself from his state's position in favor of gay marriage.
* Supports the Federal Marriage Amendment.
* Opposes civil unions.
* Has made statements in opposition to gay adoptions.
* Fired an openly gay member of the state appellate tax board, then refused to explain why.
Gun Rights:
* Signed a permanent ban on "assault weapons" in 2004.
* Has a C- rating from the NRA, which is almost unheard of for a Republican.
Immigrants' Rights:
* In 2004, vetoed a bill that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to attend Massachusetts public universities at in-state tuition rates.
* Recently proposed deputizing state troopers to arrest suspected undocumented immigrants, despite the fact that state troopers are not trained in immigration law.
Rights of the Homeless:
* Drastically cut state-run alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs for the homeless.
War on Terror:
* In September 2005, he suggested that the FBI wiretap mosques and spy on new Muslim immigrants.
Newt's my second favorite politician, Cheney is my favorite, 67 is the new 70 right?
I'd pay a few dollars for a "CHENEY/GINGRICH '08" bumper sticker. I commute on 95 in a major metro area, the shock value would be a little poke in the eye to all the commies.
Sorry to be buzzing like a bee with buzzwords, but if you want to focus on the words, then perhaps you are evading the idea - If Newt comes back, he'll be like Richard Nixon, hounded to death.
There are a lot here that love to use the "BAGGAGE" buzzword. Reminds me of the liberals whose mantra is, "Bush's Fault!"
