--but I, for one, prefer a Republican in the White House
-----
Well, I much prefer a conservative over a Republican, to be quite precise. Nothing else is acceptable and while I don't agree with your total assessment of Newt, show me a better conservative, patriotic, non-liberal candidate....and I will vote for him. And I also do not agree he is not electable. If he (or any other qualified candidate) stands and FIGHTS FROM A CONSERVATIVE POSITION and nails the libs for what they are -- they can win.

This is where the Repubs failed us -- they did not fight, and they were not conservative. They signed their own death sentence. As such, the libs won NOTHING, and did nothing because they have no advertisable platform. The Repubs gave them the contest.

This is the second time today I've read 'Republican' and 'conservative' as an important distinction while engaging in dialog with another FReeper, and I find the distinction troubling.

I'm a Republican, and believe in party loyalty because the Republican Party is the currently the only means by which conservative thought may be integrated into national policy. Unless and until there is a Whig-like party split over a matter of overriding principle, I'll hold my nose and vote for a Republican candidate even if I don't agree with his or her stance on every issue.

"Well, I much prefer a conservative over a Republican,"

... but no more compassionate conservatives.

I think Newt would make a great President. He is the most clear minded candidate avail.

He has gained much more needed experience. What is it, that would prevent him from getting elected?
