Ed Bradley of '60 Minutes' Dies

Posted on 11/09/2006 9:21:12 AM PST by AUJenn

Ed Bradley, the veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent and one of the pioneering black journalists of his generation, died today. He was 65.

Bradley, who had won 19 Emmy awards, covered an incredible array of stories after joining the CBS newsmagazine in 1981, from brain cancer to sexual abuse in the Catholic Church to the high school shootings at Columbine.

He also reported a number of award-winning documentaries, covered political conventions and filled in on the "CBS Evening News" and other programs.

Bradley remained active on "60 Minutes," but he had been ill for some time and underwent heart surgery about a year ago.

"He was this gentle giant," said Bob Schieffer, CBS's chief Washington correspondent and a close friend. "He just did so much for so many African-American kids. He was a great role model."

I will always appreciate the way he handled the LAX interview. I was expecting bias, being that it was cBS. But he was fair & appeared to understand what is really going on with this case. He even put the annoying new anchor in her place when she tried to imply that they had to be guilty of something. I'll always respect him for that.

What a shame. Leukemia can be brutal. He was thin but I thought it was just the result of aging.

Don't like having your reality checked? Tough.

Lots of folks died, yesterday. Lots more died within the past couple of weeks.

Not all of them were dedicated to undermining these United States.

What was up with that earring? Did he have a family (wife, kids) or was he, uh, living another lifestyle?

Wife, yes, I can't recall if he had any kids or not, but he just plain liked the earring. [shrug]

Not my style, but I can't fault him for it.

I hope he can do a Saddam interview real soon.

Saddam will be residing in the lowest pit of hell. I wouldn't wish that sort of thing on Mr. Bradley.

Perhaps some sort of closed circuit solution could be arranged.

Re temper tantrums.

I stoutly defended considerations for respect for Peter Jennings on FR. I felt a little hypocritical afterward though.

Proof of this was when I heard of the Republican defeat. No more Jennings. I looked on the bright side. That quizzical eyebrow, that long saturnine face. That; I know better than the great unwashed out there attitude. How he would have oozed his infinite superiority over obeisance to his views.

The effrontery of these liberal shills rankles. Do they care about Joe Doakes cashing in his chips? Nah.

Just wait, we'll now finally hear from the MSM all about how great the economy is doing, how low unemployment is, how incomes are rising and how the deficit is going down and how the nation has been protected--"under a Democratic Congress."

You can think that if you like. If I am, however, I'm one who's unconcerned you believe it to be so.

Prayers for him and his kin. I despised his liberal soapbox but he is as human as the rest of us.

I think you put it well. I don't think anyone should rejoice in the death of Bradley or anyone else who wasn't a terrorist or murderer. However, I reserve the right to speak about what his profession has become and what he helped make of it. I don't think that's disrespectful. I think anyone's like when they're on the public stage is subject to being looked at in a critical light, even at their passing.

I don't know about what the man was like in his personal life but I'm sure he did many positive things outside his profession. But I'm not going to pretend he didn't help corrupt the idea of our having a free media.

Sorry he died. Glad he won't be able to do any more anti-Republican hit pieces prior to an election.

The part where he actually died was extremely sudden.

Grim humor LOL.

May God rest his soul. I didn't care much for his politics--or the ear-ring. But he was an exceptional TV personality.
