Black Students Threaten To Sue IUPUI Over Alleged Inequities

A group of black students at Indiana-Purdue University-Indianapolis is threatening to sue the college over alleged discrimination.

The IUPUI Black Student Union said it would file a lawsuit Monday unless officials agree to provide a new black cultural center, more black faculty and $78,000 for black student groups.

The group also wants sensitivity training for administrators and an undergraduate degree program in African-American studies.

"We're not asking for anything outlandish," said IUPUI senior Dominic Dorsey, 24, who heads the group. "We're asking for what's due to us to make us feel comfortable on a Euro-centric campus."

In a nine-page letter delivered to administrators this week, the group complained that officials turned down black students' requests to use a student activity fund and that some white officials have been disrespectful to black students.

It also complained that black students were not consulted before the Mary Cable Building was torn down this year to make room for a parking lot. Cable founded the Indianapolis chapter of the NAACP.

However, not all blacks on campus feel discriminated against. Freshman Nashunda King, 18, said she feels more comfortable at IUPUI than she did at her predominantly white high school in Avon.

"I like this environment," she said. "Everybody gets the same treatment. To me, it's fair."

IUPUI officials have made racial diversity a top goal, aiming to boost the school's minority student enrollment from 15 percent to about 18 percent. Officials also want to boost minority graduation rates at the 30,000 student campus.

"People are working hard to make IUPUI a diversity-positive campus," said Karen Whitney, IUPUI's vice chancellor for student life and diversity. "We evaluate ourselves harshly, and we've not been satisfied."

Give me, give me, give me, I deserve it, you owe me, blah, blah, blah, blah.....the liberal mantra. Nothing new here and it's probably just going to get worse.

Hmmmm... Maybe you should also have asked for more classes taught in Ebonics to make you feel comfortable on an English-centric campus...

The fools have not evaluated themselves nearly as harshly as they would be evaluated by anybody with more than half a brain...

How come Asians manage to punk us Round Eyes at ACT/SAT test time?

How come the UCLA, Stanford and Berkeley Honor Rolls look like a combination of the Saigon and Hong Kong phone books?

Seeing as our society is so racist, how can Asians achieve so much?

Could it be because they work harder?

No, it must be a racist plot.

Does anyone have any statistics? Don't African and Caribbean blacks do better in college than US-born blacks?

Their demands sound a little outlandish to me also their description of the school as Euro-centrist sounds really bigotted. If they arent happy maybe they should sign up at one of the black colleges that are more Afro-centrist.

Sound a lot to me like they must have attended Jesse Jackson Preparatory School for the race baiting course he gives on extortion and blackmail.

The only thing remarkable here is that they found a black student from a predominantly white high school to quote.

I didn't know there were any mostly white high schools left.

Sounds like university officials already have the minority student's best interest at heart. I hope the calm down and focus on their grades. What makes people feel like they HAVE to protest something just because they are in college. Just go to school, get good grades, make your parent's proud and HUSH-people.

hahahaha...

Just remember that "diversity" is:
Celebrating that people are different,
while pretending not to notice any such differences.

They are just following Purdue University-West Lafayette lead. Back in the 90's the University built a real fancy black student center entirely with tax payer money.

Foreign students which outnumbered Blacks at least 3 to 1 on campus had their own privately supported old house as a student center as did other groups and organizations. Only the Blacks got preferential treatment.

If I had my way I would eliminate every liberal arts program at Purdue because they are going to ruin that university.

It's not a third rate extension campus. It's the third largest college campus in Indiana. It's a combination of both universities and offers all the degrees that the two universities offer. There are 30,000 students there. My son is going for Bio-Medical Engineering there. We are very impressed with the faculty and the campus.

You're right about it not being Purdue University, but third rate? Uh, I'm not so sure about that.

The medical school and facility is far and away the best in the state and among the best in the midwest. There's just no questioning that--don't forget, that's where Lance Armstrong was (successfully) treated for cancer.

Additionally, this whole stink about backdated stock options--where Apple and Microsoft and scores of other companies are restating earnings--began because of a journal article co-authored by--you guessed it--an IUPUI Kelley School professor; and these are just a couple of examples!.

IUPUI has the perception of being a second rate school in Indiana because it is a commuter campus, but the perception is wrong. It's a fine school with a talented faculty.

This article is a little out of date. IUPUI made an offer to the student group, which included a Black Student Affairs Office and $78,000 for black student groups ($10,000 more than the IUPUI student government's budget for all campus clubs combined, incidentally).

The group rejected the offer today, claiming that it was insufficient.

Indianapolis already has a predominately African-American university, Martin University. Maybe these students should check it out.

The Medical & Law School are the only State funded ones. It was established to do away with duplication and excess funding. IUPUI also offers the advanced degrees in Social work MSW. (IU and PU only offers undergraduate degrees.) There are several other degree programs (Music Tech) that IIRC are also only offered there and not at the other state schools: IU, PU, ISU, BS.

It's a matter of saving the tax payers money......Good deal for all.
