OK, some House races appear to still be up in the air.
In 1974, the Dems won 291 seats. The Reps won 144 seats. This was after Watergate broke... In the 94th Congress ((in office Jan 1975-Jan 1977), the Dems had a 147 seat mmajority over the Reps. Now, at most they may have a 20-30 seat majority. This is not the 1974 House.
SORRY for sparseness and sloppiness. Just felt compelled to say this.
This is supposed to make me feel good? We lose the Senate, we lose the House, we lose the governorships, and Rummy is forced out and i'm supposed to feel better because it was worse 32 years ago?
Reagan managed to do well even when both houses were dem.
We will endure.
Not better.
Just historical context.
It sucks yes. But it is one battle. Not the war.
I know. This is a small number of seats to turn around. People act like we just lost power for the next 40 years. The only thing really bad is that Bush is going to have a hard time with judicial nominees, including a possible Supreme Court one.
I agree. But in 1974, States like Pennsylvania, Illinois, and California were in electoral reach for the Republicans in Presidential elections, yet Florida and Texas were less so.
Not anymore.
It also hurts that 2/3rds of the Senate seats up next time are ours. We'll have to play defense.
No he didn't. Remember Iran-Contra? That was the story of his last two years, when the Dems had both houses. The good things Reagan did were done in the first six years.
Good point. After the 86 elections it was 258/177 D/R, and Tip O'Neil was a lot cleverer than Pelosi. Senate was 55/45 after the Dems gained 8.
Hey, I have felt depressed all day, but just wanted to remind people that this is NOT the sweeping mandate that the Dems & the MSM will say.
Not just judicial. My guess is that the U.S.S. Bolton has just been sunk.
Hmm. Seems to ba a pattern for GOP presidents. Even Bush I had his moment to shine with the Gulf War and then was taken down. With the Leftist media running on all cylinders, and the pendulum effect of American politics, this can proabably be anticipated in the future.
Iraq, for it's messiness, is a success as it keeps the fight there and has removed a vocal agressor. Tax Cuts and other measures were good too. If they had listened to the people about the border and smaller government we may not be eating crow now.
IMHO
I guess a good question should be about what you plan on accomplish by feeling bad.
One of the best things I would recommend for anyone is to read some history. Stuff happens, but by no means does history ends today. People have come back from worse.
Ask the Democrats. they lost congressional elections in 94, 98,2000,2002,2004
We lost one 2006. If a barking moonbat can feel good enough to keep fighting, why cant all of us?
And we get to endure two freaking years of Pelosi seeking an impeachment, Rangel raising taxes, and everyone cutting defense spending. Thank the Founding Fathers for the veto power.
Eh, cold comfort. Can the Democrats, through careful planning, crafty maneouvering, and skillful statesmanship so completely fail and undermine national security and the economy as much as they did in 1974 adn then on, when they proceded to abandon Vietnam and numerous other countries to Communist tyranny, achieve double digit inflation and interest rates, and high unemployment on top of a recession? Perhaps they won't need such a majority for the completion of their agenda? They certainl have the will and the mentality for defeat and surrender.
Some of conservatism's greatest victories were achieved by a divided government in both the 80's and the 90's.
Actually, Reagan swept in a GOP senate in 1980, but had an overwhelmingly democrat house lead by Tip O'Neil.
He did so well with a divided govt, he was re-elected in a landslide in 1984.
49-1. The only state he lost was his opponent's homestate of MN, mondales.
You know what we got when Reagan lost the Senate in 1986??
Anthony Kennedy instead of Robert Bork.
"This is supposed to make me feel good? We lose the Senate, we lose the House, we lose the governorships, and Rummy is forced out and i'm supposed to feel better because it was worse 32 years ago?"
Usually the President's party loses seats in the midterm elections.
What happened last night has happened to both parties, several times. It is NORMAL.
Tom McClintock was elected Lt. Governor in California. People sometimes like fresh faces and change. That is positive.
Reagan was a wonderful President. What did cause a problem was due to Congressional pressure is that we pulled out of areas that are now creating caos worldwide. Pulling out of Beirut helped a boil fester that threatens our safety and freedom. The boil will not become a massive infection.
