Wikepedia is already calling gates the "22nd secretary of defense" and is already calling rumsfeld the "former".

With the new Congress, I think they will accept nothing less than Sean Penn for SecDef.

I must say...if Rumsfeld was going to go anyway, why couldn't it have been BEFORE the election? That might've made a difference.
To: Perdogg
Bush just said Rumsfeld was here to stay last week. That was dumb.

Gates is said to be highly political. Lots of folks accused him of "politicizing intelligence".
His confirmation involved lots of mud-slinging. It went on for weeks and weeks.

Formerly of the CIA? That's a recipe for trouble. It was the CIA's "slam-dunk" assessment that encouraged W to confidently cruise along with the Iraq war.

You know, Bush has screwed the pooch again. I don't want an intelligence weanie to be the Sec Def. I want a fighter, someone who knows the DoD inside out, who can make things happen, who can fight a war and not mince words. That is the antithesis of what a political intelligence officer does for a living.
General Schwartzkopf has been retired for more than 10 years - Bush should've nominated him.
