This is just crossing my desk now; nothing follows yet. According to some sources this is the subject of the noon presser.
thanks for the update
Yessss....the people have spoken but only after the republicans demonstrated for 6 years that they either didn't know what to do with the majority role or didn't want it at all.
If a party is granted the majority but refuses to act like the majority....did they ever really have the majority?
Certainly the Pubs were given the lesson last night that it's very possible to lose power that you refuse to utilize.
"Has to be confirmed by a majority of both houses of congress... Amendment 25.
"
Thanks! I was just about to go look that up.
Rudy hasn't got the military or policy background to do the job. Robert Gates? I'm not sure he does either, but the SecDef job, as it remains available today, would be a tough sell for W at this point to any candidate worth the silver.
The job would likely mean a pay cut for anybody with the capability, and on top of that, you'd be working for an actual lame duck.
I strongly support the President, but I can't understand why it has taken him so long to publicly acknowledge something that has been clear for six years. Ever since Ted Kennedy stabbed him in the back, Bush should have known that the Democrats were vile and persistent.
You are witnessing the death of the GOP and America
I always felt since 94 that we were one election away from disaster
It just happened
But wait a minute
" Don't play poker with George Bush "
At least that has been the mantra of many on this site
So he must have an ace up his sleeve
Rummy would NEVER let us lose in Iraq - all bets are off now. Who is this replacement?
Yes, it was the honorable thing to do and not use this for political gain like the Dems were baiting him to.
Rummy didn't resign.
He doesn't cut-n-run.
Rumsfeld would have been out regardless of who won yesterday. Rumsfeld has done his job, and it is time to get some new energy and ideas in that position. Gates will be a good choice.
Bush41 is not Bush43, not even close
I never said he was
Bush said he didn't want to make it political. Well the voters made it political, and Bush lost us the house and senate most likely.
Yes, it was worth us losing the house and senate so he could remain "honorable".
Hardly. President Bush has done his part. The people who voted for Republicans yesterday did their parts.
The pouters and stay-at-home "conservatives" got exactly what they voted for...nothing.
"Ah, I just thought of something that would shock me even more... the President switching parties. "
Try President Bush resigning. That ought to get you shocked. I doubt it will happen, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. It just depends on how deeply he is personally wounded by all of this.
There was an old Saturday Night Live sketch back in 2000. President Bush was in the White House, having just begun his term. He kept saying, "Being President is hard." Cheney had to keep calming him down.
There are many who believe that George W. Bush was more of a shadow than a real President. I'm not one of them, but there are lots of folks who think that. If, by some chance, that was the case, then he's got to be feeling it pretty heavily right now.
I've never seen him as that strong a character. He doesn't do that well off the cuff, or at press conferences. He often seems to run out of things to say when the situation isn't carefully controlled.
If, and I emphasise "if," it was true that his position was that of a figurehead, then a resignation seems like a real possibility to me.
He certainly seems demoralized today.
The VP is a Constitutional Office-- Bush couldn't replace him even if he wanted.
VP is not a staffer to the President.
It's entirely separate.
Washington, D.C. - In move that was not unexpected, President George Bush fired Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld today.
Officially it is being called a "resignation". CNN is reporting that Rumsfeld is stepping down immediately.
Former CIA Director Robert Gates will assume his position.
In a news conference this morning, in President Bush was clearly stressed, he admitted that he lied last week when he said that Rumsfeld would be "staying on".
Rumsfeld has been a frequent target of Iraq war critics due to a war in Iraq that has spiraled out of control and killed over 28,00 American soldiers.
Rumsfeld is the oldest person to have held the position, and he was also the youngest when he served as the 13th Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford. Rumsfeld also served in various positions under President Richard Nixon, as well as four terms in the United States House of Representatives, and as U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1973-1974).
Someone just kill me before the bad guys have a chance to.
More bad news/no sarc
