MANAGUA, Nicaragua Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, a former Marxist revolutionary who fought a U.S.-backed insurgency in the 1980s, has won Nicaragua's presidential election, according to results released Tuesday.
With 91 percent of the vote counted, Ortega had 38 percent of the vote compared to 29 percent for Harvard-educated Eduardo Montealegre. Under Nicaraguan law, the winner must get 35 percent and have a 5 percentage point lead to win the election outright and avoid a runoff.
Montealegre immediately recognized the results, but said he and his party's lawmakers would spend the next five years ensuring that Ortega stayed true to his promises to support free trade and promote private business.
"We promise to continue our fight," he said.
Ortega was expected to speak later Tuesday. The former president spent most of the 1980s fighting a U.S.-backed Contra insurgency. He lost the presidency in the 1990 election, ending Sandinista rule and years of civil war, and has spent the past 16 years trying to get his old job back.

I wonder which of our dem politicos will be the 1st to run down there to hug ol danny boy.
Carter probably gave him a congratulatory phone call already, my guess for 'first to give him a hug' would be Teddy.
Why do I feel that I am reliving 1976-1980 all over again?
I wanted that era to go away.
Now, there is a very good question. He undoubtedly spent millions in this country to help the Democrats. Wonder how far a few paltry millions would go in Nicaragua, to help the Sandinistas?
Is there ANY good news this morning?!
No, he'll be sending trained saboteurs and agitprop men instead.
I wanted that era to go away.
We now know what we have to do.
Jimuh Carter. Are you idiot Republican's awake yet? Don't you get it?
You might pick up a remaindered or secondhand copy of Arnaud de Borchgrave's Monimbo', which was a roman a clef (novelized news report) about Nicaragua and what was going on there -- and what they intended to do.
The short form is sketched by what the Cubans, East Germans, PLO scum, Salvadoran Communists and Sandinistas used to tell each other, back in the day -- "By 1995, we'll be in El Paso!"
Jimmy, I don't miss you.
It's a black day all over. Commies take back Nicaragua. Traitors take back America. Hamas declares war. Sunni Iraq declares war. I hate to say it, but I can't help thinking that it IS all Bush's fault. He played Mr. Niceguy with the anti-American Treason Press and the anti-American Treason Democrats... and now we're ALL going to pay the price.
I curse Carl Rove and his strategy of "downplay the issues and concentrate on organizational muscle". I curse the Whitehouse for letting the Traitor Media and the Traitor Democrats control the debate.
Excellent advice, proud_yank. Excellent advice.
Communists back in charge in Nicaragua, communists back in charge in Washington - looks like the North American Union has already happened!
President Bush has done everything - everything - possible to make this nation safe.
And he has succeeded in this to a very large degree.
Do not attribute to him the crimes of his detractors and maligners. The faults are not his, but in those - including us - who have not done enough.
Attack the real enemies - those who wish to kill our civilization, and those of our civilization who would see it die because of their ungodly hate for the true and good and their feverish ambitions.

OK, so it looks like Ortega pulled it off and will be the next president of Nicaragua. We've been receiving tons of emails from people asking what this means for Nicaragua's future, travel safety, investments, etc. While we don't pretend to have the answers, there are several important things to consider. The first is that Nicaragua's president was "voted" in, democratically. It looks like he'll end up with around 40% of the total votes. Even if he's not the candidate of choice for you, lot's of people here picked him. Don't worry, we won't be returning to communism (a question asked in one email). As President of a democracy, he'll have to work with the National Assembly to make things happen - a group made up primarily of his opponents. There are checks and balances here. I think the biggest issue we'll be facing is his negative image and the fear of the unknown - especially as painted by the US government, who is in the habit of overstepping their bounds and exaggerating such issues. Personally, I don't think these election results should cause everybody to freak out, at least not yet. The Sandinistas are capitalists like everybody else and have a lot to gain from tourism and foreign investment. I'm not expecting that they do anything to disrupt the progress Nicaragua is making along these fronts. So, rather than worry about the unknown, let's all take some time to see what is going to happen. We should all know a lot more in the next month or two. In the meantime, the waves will be super fun and we have a contest coming up at Maderas. Check out the flyer above and come out to support the local surfers!
Jon Cary, Jimmy Carter, Tom Harkin, and all the socialist Demagogues are thrilled. One of their own has taken over in Nicaragua!!
Talk about a "blast from the 80s past"! Makes me want to bring out my legwarmers, hot rollers and hairspray and make Mr. HR wear a "skinny tie"!
