Nope, not remotely. Only about half the country are ideologues of either camp. The other half things they are all strident to nuts, incompetent to clueless, each in their own special ed ways. The political system is working fine and steering straight for the Guiliani-Liberman crossing point. The politicos are fit to be tied, because the harder they scream at each other, the more the people force them to work together.

You are dreaming, it just won. The diehards against it just lost everything they had.

LS the GOP abandoned Graf because he was not on the same reservation with the President on illegal immigration. He didn't lose by so much that some money from the RNC might have made a big difference.

Nope, being liked by media types and liberals isn't going to happen. But if you think all the people who voted for Webb but against same sex marriage are Pelosi liberals, you are delusional. The dems are getting tons of votes from people who are not particularly liberal. Republicans can get those votes. But not by pretending their bosses (that's the people, you know) are delusional sheep to be spat on and cursed. That's how the left earned its recent stint in the wilderness, remember?

Bush was asked a question about this during the 1 PM presser and said he should have mentioned comprehensive reform as something he could do with Dhimmis. He said that people had told him they want to see enforcement first and that he was demonstrating that, so he thought the Repubs would go along. This is an issue that can still be defeated because many of the new Dhimmis are conservative and would face voter backlash in 20008.

Fine, but how do you explain Hayworth? He's strong borders. And how do you explain that despite passing a bunch of anti-illegal laws, Arizonians re-elected that witch? What I see is a majority of Arizonians who want their cake and eat it too.

Ok, maybe I've gone from optimist to cynic, but I have a very hard time believing in a) any "conservative Democrat, and b) that ANY House Dem would defy Nancy to vote with conservative Republicans on anything, esp. against the president and the Speaker of their own party.

Unfortunately, a lot of us here complained about each item you mentioned and were called judas for doing so. Something changed in DC after January 20th 2005, I don't know what, but there was a change and the dems have been in charge without being in charge.

AZ is not only being invaded by illegals, she is being invaded by liberals from CA. Not sure which is worse.

Bump your post. It was always explained to me that Bush was so doggedly pro-Invasion because he was catering to the Chamber of Commerce and their need for illegal labor. But it always felt to me that there had to be a deeper and more personal agenda going--

Like, maybe he and his family were raised by Mexican nannies, cleaned up after by Mexican maids, and never had to mow a lawn or spread a wheelbarrow load of mulch? That's the way Texas aristos are now...there's no reason to think things were different back then.

Noblesse Oblige. Look at the Harriet Miers thing--"Put her on the SC, she's just been really good to me and my family." Clueless.

Well, we can start by finding out about the maid who "was just like a member of the family" a few months back. I thought at the time there ought to be more discussion of whether she was legal or illegal.

Part of the awfulness of the Amnesty Bill was that it freed employers from any liability for breaking the law in the hiring of illegal help.

Maybe that was to protect him and his--self-serving legislation.

That's easy. What we will get now is no, no, yes, no, yes, yes, yes. The first reduces potential democratic votes, a clear no. Ditto 2. 3 spends government money taken from the rich on potential democratic voters, a clear yes. 4 suppresses democratic (illegal) votes, a clear no. 5 is a nice easy meaningless sop so that's a pragmatic yes, 6 helps both corporate profits and democratic votes so it is a resounding yes from the entire chorus, and 6 is another meaningless sop without the others and spends government money on government workers, always popular with those whose cousins can get the gig.

Simple. The dem interests are obvious and no others will be served in the matter.

The man running against him was a popular mayor from Tempe. Tempe is a liberal enclave of Phoenix. Ran a very nasty campaign against JD and none of it had to do with immigration -- mostly had to do with Abramoff $$ and Stem Cells.. Udalls Granddaughter was featured for weeks on end in an ad saying JD was against Stem Cells and she had Lupus and was going to die because of JD Hayworth.

I didn't see one ad saying anything about immigration because that subject is a hot button here in AZ and might have helped JD... who, BTW, may not be out yet..... according to our local news he's within 6000 votes and they are still counting...

Our local paper stated today one reason kyl won big -- Illegal Immigration was the number 1 reason.

The hispanics beat Steele in MD (they showed better support for other candidates) and they will come out against any and all black conservatives. Against black Dims too.

Welcome to the Balkans.

Here comes amnesty. The House immigration bill was the one that had teeth. This is going to be ridiculous.

Recall that the House bill was eventually passed by the conference and the Senate. It is the law of the land.

However, it was never funded. And there isn't a chance in Hades that Charlie Rangel's Ways & Means Committee will appropriate a penny for it.

Border security is a dead issue..
