Nice post - I have to agree with pretty much everything you said.
At this point I'm not going to go with the optimistic projection, I'll go with the more tempered one.

Right. Those people who don't vote or vote third-party still have their own set of core interests and values, whatever they nay be, and many would make a calculated decision to vote in such a way to best serve their own interests. But the hard-core reactionsaries will not, so Jeff is somewhat right, but certainly not copletely. I don't think it's quite as black-and-white as he actually sees it.
And I think he's probably going to be the 44th President.
Given a choice between McCain and Hillary I would gladly vote for McCain. There are some problems with McCain.
1) His disregard for Freedom of Speech.
2) He obviously disdains the GOP Base.
3) His age/health
Shoot, I'll take a one vote win at this point so we can see all the lefties go into a Sore-Loserman tizzy.
Hopefully, he can eeke this out by a few thousand votes.

I think this election turned out badly for us mostly because of Iraq, and secondly because not enough has been done yet on immigration. If we can get Iraq and immigration into decent shape by 2008 then McCain or Romney should beat whoever the Dems nominate. The thing that nailed us big time in this election was the lack of troop withdrawals from Iraq. We're not showing any concrete, measurable progress at getting our troops out of Iraq. That will be critical for 2008. We need at least half of our troops out of there by then.
Throw in the fact that he is also mentally unbalanced!
Wish we had better news. It's up in the air and not looking very good, at least not right now. We need some good numbers to break for Burns, and it's just not happening yet. He's well behind in some counties where he did much better before.

Well right now there is blood in the water, I think the dems got their dauber up and I think that some of the repubs will not go against the tide. (Anyone see Trent lot Bravely holding the line?) I would not be surprised if the republican congress critters capitulate, and rubber stamp whatever the Dems do. Oh gawd I hope they fight but wow I just don't see enough pitbulls in there.

1994 was a Liberty voter phenomenon. No segment of the electorate was screwed worse by the GOP congressional majority than the Liberty voter.
And nobody needs Liberty voters more than the new Congressional minority. Maybe they'll wise up.

I hate to say it, especially here, but comprehensive reform, like the President's plan, is what's going to sell. Hard-liners like Randy Graf can win primaries, but their solutions just aren't going to sell.
As maddening as it is, the independent and swing voters that Republicans have to win over to win just aren't that agitated - at least not enough to embrace deportation.
But, yeah, I think it's going to be McCain, after this.
As much as I disagree with him on some issues, I think it should be McCain.
America's bitter divisions provide encouragement to our enemies. Put McCain up against Hillary (and it will be Hillary now, let's not kid ourselves abotu that, etiher), and he can win 55% of the vote. I think that America needs that.

The new leaders (no way in hell Hasert keeps his job) are going to be more conservative, tougher, and more competent.
