"and GOP Congress gave early approval to that debacle. Or else Dems can kiss their security credentials goodbye forever, particularly 2008."

Well right now there is blood in the water, I think the dems got their dauber up and I think that some of the repubs will not go against the tide. (Anyone see Trent lot Bravely holding the line?) I would not be surprised if the republican congress critters capitulate, and rubber stamp whatever the Dems do. Oh gawd I hope they fight but wow I just don't see enough pitbulls in there.

Waayyy too many Rinos left.

Just curious, who would be the republican leader in the senate?

The new leaders (no way in hell Hasert keeps his job) are going to be more conservative, tougher, and more competent.

They don't have a choice now but fight. Fewer RINOs and new leadership (not old guard like Frist, Lott, Dole...) will help or they will lose the base completely and they know it.

Rove & Co spent almost a year fighting for more-than-a-minimum immigration bill, practically ignoring Iraq and economy - every time Bush made speeches on these his polls went up - I never understood that, I think Rove misfired here big time. Also spending time and money defending RINOs in "blue" states instead of shoring up support for Republican conservatives against their pseudo-conservatives in "red" states - just an easy campaign like "I respect my opponent and we agree on most or all issues, but a vote for him gives a vote to Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid". Simple, and I think, effective, but don't know anyone who did this in "red" districts or states.
