Concur. We lost the independents 3:2 in most of the close races. Women, Catholics, suburban Moms went RAT. Weary of the war in Iraq.

The base voted almost straight GOP.

Of course they did. Depressing your base doesn't mean that they vote for the other party, it means that they don't vote in the same numbers as the opposition. It is clear that happened tonight.

The base, VOTED. WE VOTED. WE ARE THE BASE.

All others who didn't vote, are NOT the base, no matter their claims.

Maybe that's why their results page was taken down.

No, it means that SOME Of them don't; you know, the ones who put their personal agendas before the country.

It effectively is. Haven't we learned yet that voting third-party gives the race to the Democrats? Just look at Montana - the Republicans would still have the Senate if it weren't for the third-party votes?

To a Libertarian, a big government social conservatives are are no more appealing than a socialist democrats.

Republicans are going to continue to lose a significant amount of the the libertarian vote until they either ease up on the social conservatism or the big government spending.

Yeah, Hillarycare had more to do with it than the check-kiting scheme. nobody paid that much attention to it except for Rostenkowski's deal.

"82% of precincts reporting"

Have they indicated which way the precincts that have not been counted normally go? Democrat or Republican?

"In '94 there were probably a few rats left with some ethics - people like your mom."

My Mom and her family are the very essence of the old guard Democrats, Harry Truman and Roosevelt. My Grandfather despised the Kennedys, and cheered the day Teddy's Presidential hopes went down the drain.

If my grandfather were alive today he would have probably shot Pelosi and Dirty Harry just out of shame.

He hated Liberals, He thought they destroyed our chances to win in Viet Nam. He was also a proud Reagan Democrat as was my Mother.

My Mom still votes for some Democrats but she voted for Blackwell. She likes how he went after Taft and said anyone who would risk that kind of political danger needed to be given a chance.

Ahh well.

Which party demanded the recount? Or is it strictly an administratively-driven error and decision?

"We weren't getting any tax cuts these next two years anyway so nothing has changed.

The prospects of a further tax cut in 2008 depends on the GOP and if they can drop the "compassionate conservative" angle. If we nominate a viable fiscal conservative then the chances for further tax cuts are really good.

BTW, its the creation of new entitlements that had a large impact on depressing the base tonight. The brainchild of those entitlements has been the GOP."

- I didn't like how the Medicare /Rx plan went down either, but I doubt it depressed the base tonight; heck, Pres. Bush has been blasted tonight for wasting his post 04 election capital on trying to do Soc. Sec. reform, which I thought was worth going after...then again, 12 term Congressman Clay Shaw lost his seat last night basically over his commitment to SocSec reform, so who knows...

I'm curious: who do you see that's a viable fiscal conservative out there?

Here's a list of what counties still remain...

cascade – moderate dem county 48,000 reg voters 23 of 38 reporting 9600 Burns 10,800 Tester
fergus – moderate rep county 8000 reg voters 4 of 16 reporting 861 Burns 504 Tester
gallatin - even 56,000 reg voters 10 of 46 reporting 9900 Burns 9700 Tester
glacier – moderate rep county 8000 reg voters 8 of 16 reporting 1200 Burns 1000 Tester
lake - even 8000 reg voters 20 of 22 reporting 4200 Burns 4300 Tester
lewis & clark - moderate rep county 38,000 reg voters 53 of 54 11,400 Burns 14,400 Tester
lincoln - strong rep 12,000 reg voters 8 of 14 reporting 2600 Burns 2000 Tester
yellowstone - strong rep 92,000 reg voters 0 of 69 reporting

They are now separated by 3300 votes. With the exception of Lewis & Clark, the voting results have closely paralleled 2004. There is no reason to believe Burns can't pick up the necessary votes in Yellowstone where Bush received 41,000 votes to Kerry's 24,000.

"The base voted almost straight GOP."

Ohio was a glaring exception to that rule.
