MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FedEx Corp. said Tuesday it has canceled its order for 10 Airbus A380 jets, the new jumbo double-decker plane that has been dogged by numerous delays.
The company's FedEx Express unit has ordered 15 Boeing Co. 777 Freighters, and has options to purchase an additional 15, FedEx said in a news release. The company cited Airbus' production delays as the reason for the decision.

Been to Long Beach lately? No. All I know about Long Beach, California is that there were a lot of oil wells there 100 years ago.

Singapore and Emirates are only now finding out how much gas that pig eats. On a previus thread someone ran the numbers on A380 specs.
5 metric tonnes of fuel will thrust this beast about 170 miles in a thusward manner.

I know who has flown the 777 says it's a dream. There are things that the GE-90 can do for a man that no woman can.

The word is Fedex ordered Airbus in the first place because the Europeans require Airbus purchases if you want to get prime terminal spaces at the major European airports.

All planes are overweight at first.

Vile Bastards. Where the hell is the WTO in matters like these? That kind of protectionism is criminal.

Other than the ongoing delay in delivery of the A380, I gotta figure it's a matter of the aircraft being overweight (less cargo capacity) and wake turbulence -- that is a big deal when your trying to land a lot of aircraft in a fixed amount of time. Word is the A-380 will take at least 2 slots in the pattern for 'heavies' instead of 1.

All planes are overweight at first. Not true. The F-16A is a perfect example of an aircraft that was mind-blowing out of the box, and was then fattened up by the Air Force.
Also, the 777 had no weight issues to deal with, since the knowledge of range being paramount from the beginning caused Boeing to be very careful with their math. That original attention to detail is what has allowed Boeing to easily ramp up to the LR and ER versions with little re engineering being necessary.

I should have specified passenger planes. When I say they are all overweight, I'm quoting Boeing program managers who regularly visit my place of employment and tell us war stories about current and previous programs. I'm currently involved in the 787. It's also overweight.

There is always the 747-8F freighter.
At first, I thought that said "fighter."
THAT, I'd like to see! (And ride).

Howard Hughes built himself a huge plane called "The Spruce Goose". Looks like Airbus has built a huge plane we can call "The Aluminum Albatross".

To bad they won't be making 747-combis anymore, that would have been a neat ride.
