The Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA) says an independent panel is being set up to investigate if comments made by Sydney cleric, Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilali, endorse rape.
Sheikh Al Hilali has been at the centre of controversy since comments he made suggested women who dressed immodestly were inviting sexual assault.
He says his comments have been taken out of context and will resign if an independent panel finds him guilty of endorsing rape.
LMA president Tom Zreika says a panel will be established to look at the matter.
"The process has to be conducted and it will be conducted," he said.
He has not confirmed a timeframe for the investigation.
Outside Lakemba Mosque in Sydney yesterday, Sheikh Al Hilali introduced Cindy Taylor, who said she travelled from Victoria to defend him because he has been misunderstood.
"People really need to have more of an open mind," she said.
Ms Taylor said she has been sexually assaulted twice and she understands what Sheikh Al Hilali tried to say in his sermon about women and rape.
She says he believes sexual assault is one of the worst crimes.
"His analogy certainly did not justify the act of rape," she said.

From context, I'd bet that Cindy Taylor has opted to try preventing future assaults by covering up, rather than pulling a gun and covering the next would-be perp.

How come Muzzie men have such a greater problem with women not wearing burkas than the rest of us?

So as Muslum man you belong to religion that don't allow sex for love and keep your women in burkas as slaves to you
And as Muslum woman you not allow to be in same room with man relative or no relative
No wonder why they go off like BOMBS

Perhaps a few Diggers should consider hunting over a baited field.
Just position one of your gorgeous beauties on the public beach in a respectable two piece bathing suit.
About 50 yards away in a "blind" -- position a shooter.
Any idiot who thinks the lady's exposed flesh gives him the right to "help himself to uncovered meat" as the Sheik suggested -- blow his freaking head off.
Here in the States, we're no longer allowed to hunt over a baited field --- but I suspect that will change soon.

How big is Ms Taylor's law practice I wonder? I don't understand how her being sexually assaulted twice makes her better able to understand his stupid remarks. Is she a Muslim too?

Probably a Dem Actually she's even worse - she's a Green. She's been their candidate in a few Parliamentary elections, generally capturing about 3% of the vote.

Traditional Australians are being dispossessed, that's all that really matters. Attempts to tame the wild men are just efforts to grease the skids for that dispossession, aimed not at protecting women (the first reaction of the Australian estabslihsment was to cover up and then downplay the gang rapes) or reforming Islam but at easing the fears of the white population over their imminent demise. This Cindy Taylor is a good example. Think of the vituperation the left has heaped on toothless Christian sects over the last 50 years or so. What is it about Islam that keeps them so quiet, that has one of them rushing to the defense of a caveman like Al Hilali? They ain't white and they're anti-Western, that's all - these values trump all others. If criticism of this Sheik and others like him gets out of hand it could lead to the majority of Australians questioning the wisdom of multiculti and preventing that is the chief concern of the modern Western left. Cindy Taylor shows just how much they're willing to debase themselves in the effort.
What was the nature of the gang rapes that set this whole thing off? They were not really about the attitude that Islam has about women, though that was a background factor, they were racist hate crimes (carried out, unless I miss my guess, by dope smoking little Arab street thugs). That fact has been successfully deflected by making the controversy about the attitudes of Islam over women instead of the reality that it is the about the attitudes of the dominant left about race and where those attitudes are leading Australia.
