I am a 35 year-old, life-long Republican, up until a year ago when I registered as an Independent. Without getting into details, I was tired of the games Republicans were playing and not sticking to their convictions. The line between Democrat and Republican was blurred, and to be honest, I'd had it with both sides of the aisle.
I have been following the developments of the 2006 election and hear the glee in the media's voice as they tout the poll numbers showing a Democrat victory on Tuesday. They can't contain themselves, wanting to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the polls. My irritation with Republicans has turned into disdain for Democrats and the media. Their over confidence. Their exuberance. Their attacks without answers. All of it has actually gotten me a little more fired up for Tuesday.
I am not going to predict that the Republicans will hold the House and Senate, but I hate to think what might happen if they don’t. What I will predict, is that the base, thought to be unmotivated, will actually show more life on election day than initially thought. I believe there will be a lot of voters who want change or to teach the Republicans a lesson, but when they pull the lever, won’t trust Democrats like Pelosi and Reid to protect them. I believe there may be some surprises on Tuesday night, and in the end, the media and Democrats overwhelming effort to depress Republican turn-out will actually be what drives those frustrated Republicans to the polls.
A silent storm is brewing, it just depends on how big a wave it produces.

I have a sense that the Republican base is highly motivated to vote this year.

You make the anger felt toward your party during the primary... NOT by staying home or by voting for communists during the general election. Anyone who behaves in this manner come Nov. 7 is a GD fool.
I was in the same state as you and in recent days listening and watching democrats and the media I chose to vote straight Republican .
Bad as the Republicans have been they are still light years better than the Democrats.
Democrats are the Party of Death, Party of despair, Party of NO IDEAS. They are the misery Party.
Kerry capped it all as the POSTER boy of the democrat party.
I'm still mad about the Mexican INVASION and the way Bush is handling it.
I think this potential wave is why the Democrats have 7,000 lawyers out on election day. The legacy of Al Gore.
My husband is the same way. He is a registered independent (small i) and he votes Republican. We got a telephone call Sunday evening during dinner trying to convince him to vote for a Democrat. Last night after 10 pm, another vote solicitation on the phone. They are really working the independents. I think they assume too much regarding the independents.
This year, the Republicans deserve to lose. The only problem is that the Democrats deserve to lose so much more.
Does anybody care ?

First, the left is tirelessly campaigning to convince conservatives they need to stay home...there is no need to vote because we (left) have a landslide already in progress.
Second, the media, Fox included, is already building a case against electronic voting. Where dems do not out vote Conservatives, no matter how rare or how overwhelming, the left will replay 2004 with new tools and with arguments they've probably scripted already.
The first is 'new' only because it has been more obvious and more concentrated than in the past.
The second is merely a continuation of their previous hanging chad tactic made into strategy. In 2004 democrats claimed they were too dumb to understand a time proved system, so electronics were demanded in order to overcome their handicaps...providing them a new bogey man.
Whether it 'wins' them an election or not, even if it 'only' mires the system for the two years until 2008; the entire process will have been trashed and representative democracy set back by cold political choice.
Keep in mind that the only time you are likely to find a candidate that represents 100% of your views and opinions is when you get off your own a$$ and run. Our founders were very deliberate in developing a system where Americans were never expected to be 100% satisfied with our government which is the whole concept behind regularly recurring elections....
