According to the Presidential Succession Act of 1792, the Senate president pro tempore1 was next in line after the vice president to succeed to the presidency, followed by the Speaker of the House.
In 1886, however, Congress changed the order of presidential succession, replacing the president pro tempore and the Speaker with the cabinet officers. Proponents of this change argued that the congressional leaders lacked executive experience, and none had served as president, while six former secretaries of state had later been elected to that office.
The Presidential Succession Act of 1947, signed by President Harry Truman, changed the order again to what it is today. The cabinet members are ordered in the line of succession according to the date their offices were established.
Prior to the ratification of the 25th Amendment in 1967, there was no provision for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency. When a president died in office, the vice president succeeded him, and the vice presidency then remained vacant. The first vice president to take office under the new procedure was Gerald Ford, who was nominated by Nixon on Oct. 12, 1973, and confirmed by Congress the following Dec. 6.

Of course, this will have to be resolved by the Supreme Court if the issue ever comes up.
As a point of order - the Vice-President is first in line, the second in line is Nancy Pelosi. You could only say she was third in line if you were placing the President first in line of succession, which doesn't make sense - he already is in office.
However from a practical standpoint, for the Speaker to succeed, both the President and the Vice President would have to die at the same time. The idea that Bush and Cheney could be impeached simultaneously is absurd and everyone knows it. Not to mention that there is no scenario that gives the 'Rats 67 votes in the Senate to remove either of them.

Section 2 of the 25th Ammendment states: "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."
A more likely scenario than the one you proposed would be the President passing away, and while the new Vice President is awaiting confirmation, the new President (formerly VP) also passes. e.g, Assassination and a heart attack the following month.
God willing, we never see that scenario play out regardless of who's in office.

Why? The law is pretty straightforward.
If the President dies or is removed from office, the Vice President becomes President. If, before a new Vice President can be appointed accordingly to the constitutional requirements, the new President dies or is removed, the Speaker of the House becomes President. And so on with the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and then the Secretaries of the various Cabinet offices, in their respective order.

Looks like Congress has a plan to trump anyone lower than the Speaker.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have absolutely no doubt that if the Dems take control of either house, an extreme lefty will try to assassinate the president and veep. They are unhinged little creatures.

In a "hostile" political climate like we have, the likelihood is that the new President would appoint a President who would pass overwhelmingly in Congress (it is also worth noting that there is no "advice and consent" clause in here, which indicates a straight up or down vote without debate). When Nixon nominated Ford and when Ford nominated Rockefeller, there was never a question of confirmation, that is what would be done now, we would not see anyone the 'Rats would try to hold up.
Are you aware of how rare the occurences are that both of them are together in public?
