Not a normal Election
Townhall ^ | 11/02/06 | Bob Tyrrell

WASHINGTON -- The midterm elections approach, and there is excitement in Washington. Some of the learned psephologists predict a close struggle for control, at least in the House of Representatives. Others predict a "blow-out," with the Republicans being blown out in the House and possibly edged out in the Senate. Looking back on history we should have predicted setbacks for the Republicans in this off-year election. President George W. Bush broke with historic convention when he actually picked up seats in 2002, but now things are apparently back to normal. In normal times the sitting president's party suffers losses on the Hill at midterm.

Yet these are not normal times. What throughout the decades of the Cold War was called the Liberal Establishment has been drained of ideas and meaning. It is what historians call an Old Order, a passing Old Order. Its political party, the Democratic Party, has been moribund for years. The party has no policy coherence and no principled leadership. Yesteryear's disciplined liberal Democrats such, as Adlai Stevenson and Hubert Humphrey, have been replaced by blunderbusses such as Sen. Harry Reid and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, who seem to think that a liberal agenda is a temper tantrum and a congressional investigation. That is what they promise if they gain leadership of the Senate and the House, along with tax increases.

The Democrats' last successful national leader was President Bill Clinton, who governed as a centrist famous for saying that "the era of big government is over." His boasts were a balanced budget and economic growth. He was a reasonably good Republican president except for the fact that he ran his campaigns with foreign money and his office like a heterosexual Mark Foley. Foley had salacious e-mails to a male intern. Clinton had salacious telephone calls late into the night with a female intern.

Because the Democratic Party is in such intellectual and moral decline, the Republicans should be eking out victory next week. The economy could hardly be better, and the Democrats' alternative is a combination of tax increases and a promise to investigate corporations and financial services, a formula for recession. The war against terror is being successfully executed, and the Democrats' response is to hobble that execution through proscriptive laws and more investigations. The war in Iraq is not going well, but the Democrats' only policy is to withdraw our army to, I believe Sen. Reid suggests, Okinawa. Despite the Democrats' feeble alternatives, the Republicans will probably lose control of the House and possibly of the Senate. Yet that is not the end of the drama. Many House races will be so close that they will land in the courts.

Here is still more evidence that these are not normal times. It may take weeks before we know who won control of the House and it certainly will take weeks before we know who won every seat. John Fund, one of our finest psephologists, explains in OpinionJournal.com that the prevalence of absentee ballots makes these results almost inevitable. Thus on Nov. 15, when the Republican members of Congress are scheduled to elect their leadership, some of those members voting will not even know if they will be coming back to Congress. That makes no sense. Nor does it make sense for the Republicans to elect their leadership without a thorough reevaluation of how they lost touch with their base. Conservative dissatisfaction with the House leadership is surely the reason the Republicans find themselves in their present fix.

The Republicans are going to have to reestablish their connection with their base. They can hardly do this by rushing ahead with leadership elections that might not even include members of the incoming Republican delegation. The Republicans can hold their leadership reelection any time before Dec. 20. It is important that they set a new date for their leadership election so that only reelected members vote and the Republican base is assured that a fast one is not being pulled on them in Washington. The Democrats are an Old Order. It is time that the Republicans act with the vigor and confidence of a New Order.

I have a theory. God, I hope I am wrong.

Why would George Bush care is he has a "democrat" congress? Personally, I think he's still mad at the conservatives over the amnesty thing.

I think he & Rove are putting on the the fighting-front but really want the Dems to take control for these reasons:

1 = the amnesty legislation that he's ALREADY PROMISED TO MEXICO will slide right on through - no problem baby!

2 = the democrats will stop the funding of the war. He HAS to leave Iraq but it will be the dems fault, not his.

Ok, have at my theory. Tell me I'm wrong because, with all my heart, I want to be wrong on this one.

How about waiting until November 8, 2006?

1. Your interpretation of Bush's desire for "amnesty" is simply off the mark. He wants a guest worker program, but he isn't about to lose an election in order to accomplish this.

2. And why is he not about to lose an election? He wants support for the troops and to be able to fnish the job in Iraq. I suggest you listen to the interview posted in Michael Barone's column last week.

The President doesn't lie, and he doesn't allow millions of Republicans to be manipulated into a loss.

I suggest you go take a walk to clear your head.

That's only half of his proposal, as you well know. The other part is his demand for "a path to citizenship" which, as we all know, is a form of amnesty.

We hear a lot about how midterm elections turn out "historically".

There is one thing we must think about. We are in the 21st Century with internet and other speed of light communications apparatus. One cannot predict elections any longer from a historical standpoint.

A Freeper brought down Dan Rather and Company in '04. A blogger exposed Kerry's "botched joke". Is it safe to say that history is changing?

Another thing that no one seems to factor into elections is 9/11.

The media may have the luxury of "sweeping it under the rug" but it is SEARED into the hearts and minds of every American. I think it will effect elections (subconsciously) for years to come.

The President doesn't lie...

I'm afraid you've lost me there. Lying is part of a president's job, and you can be certain that every good president does it. The only questions are why are the lies told, and to whom?

Haven't you ever noticed how the President occasionally changes the subject, refuses to answer, etc.? Nope, no lies. He may not tell you everything, but he is known for not lying.

This is also not a normal election because Hillary and company want to make sure they are setting the groundwork for '08. In order for Hillary to win, she will need a corrupt Democrat controlled House and Senate to setup the '08 election for the most corrupt elections in the history of our country.

We need to begin to stop her by voting on Tuesday.

President Bush does not want a democrat congress.

It's the democrats that want to impeach him. The president truly wants to win in Iraq. I saw him on FoxNews campaigning real hard for a republican in Perry, GA (incidentally Sam Nunn's hometown) the other day.

Think it through, and don't be stuck on that fence situation.

Oh, I'm not on any fence. I am an RNC volunteer, a republican fighter and, as a matter of fact, a true Mayflower descendant... I will vote straight R's on Tuesday.

But, I just have this feeling about Bush and Mexico. Can't shake it.

I am sure you are a true conservative.

Just don't let yourself think that the president wants to lose the congress to take himself off the hook with the Latinos (i.e., the guest worker and border fence).
