"CNN 'Violated Embed Privilege' With Sniper Video"
By Meghan Mulhern
CNSNews.com Correspondent
November 01, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Being embedded with the U.S. military in Iraq is "a privilege, not a right," and CNN violated that right by airing a video clip showing terrorists sniping at American soldiers in Iraq, a spokesman for Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) said Tuesday.
"Mr. Hunter believes that the airing of that video serves as propaganda for the enemy in time of war and does not believe it appropriate for CNN to be broadcasting that material," said Michael Harrison, senior legislative assistant to Hunter.
"It adds nothing to the debate and adds nothing to morale for our troops that are putting their lives at risk and sacrificing time with their families to serve our country," Harrison told Cybercast News Service."

"Al-Jazeera Plans to Battle Western Media"
By JIM KRANE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
DOHA, Qatar (AP) -
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Al-Jazeera's taboo-smashing newscasts regularly vex politicians in Washington, but not nearly as much as they anger leaders in the Arab world, where the news channel has been banned from operating in 18 countries at one time or another.
Now, the network is launching its biggest gamble on its 10th anniversary - an English-language channel with an Arab perspective. Al-Jazeera International plans to hit the airwaves Nov. 15 and hopes to steal viewers from CNN and the BBC.
Feisty and sometimes graphic coverage of global carnage is an Al-Jazeera specialty, as is bracing commentary that has shaken up the Arab world and rattled the West.
"We have an edge over the other networks: We're already based in the Middle East. And we have a different perspective," director Wadah Khanfar told a news conference at the network's Doha headquarters Wednesday."

"French interior minister Sarkozy vows tough sentences for bus attackers"
AFP via The Tocqueville Connection ^ | 11/01/2006
Posted on 11/02/2006 1:12:14 AM PST by Republicain
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MARSEILLE, France, Nov 1, 2006 (AFP) - French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday demanded severe punishments for the perpetrators of an arson attack on a bus that has left a young woman critically burned.
"The people who did this should be brought to account, whatever their age ... Minors between 16 and 18 who repeatedly commit offences should be punished as if they were adults," said Sarkozy, who hopes to become the right-wing's candidate in France's 2007 presidential election.
Five French teenagers have been arrested over the firebombing of the bus in the southern city of Marseille at the weekend. Some have admitted being involved, according to a source close to the inquiry.
The youths, one aged 15 and four aged 17, were being held in police custody in Marseille following their arrest in a dawn raid on Tuesday.
A judge will decide on Thursday whether to place them under investigation, the first stage towards pressing charges.
Sarkozy visited Marseille late on Wednesday to meet the family of the victim, a 26-year-old university student of Senegalese origin, who suffered burns to 60 percent of her body in the attack.
Mama Gelledou was unable to get out of the bus in time after youths doused the vehicle with petrol and set it alight. She is in a Marseille burns clinic in an induced coma with doctors unsure that she will survive."

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A jury Wednesday found an Ethiopian immigrant guilty of the genital mutilation of his 2-year-old daughter in what was believed to be the first criminal case in the United States involving the ancient African tradition.
Khalid Adem, 30, was convicted of aggravated battery and cruelty to children. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors said Adem used scissors to remove his daughters clitoris in his familys Atlanta-area apartment in 2001. The childs mother, Fortunate Adem, said she did not discover it until more than a year later.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Knives, razors or even sharp stones are usually used, according to a 2001 department report. The tools often are not sterilized, and often, many girls are circumcised at the same ceremony, leading to infection.
It is unknown how many girls have died from the procedure, either during the cutting or from infections, or years later in childbirth. Nightmares, depression, shock and feelings of betrayal are common psychological side effects, according to a 2001 federal report.
Since 2001, the State Department estimates that up to 130 million women worldwide have undergone circumcision."

"Hezbollah pushes for veto power in Cabinet"
By Sam F. Ghattas
ASSOCIATED PRESS
November 2, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BEIRUT -- Hezbollah is threatening street protests to force early elections in Lebanon if its demands are not met for a "national unity" Cabinet that would give the Islamic militants and their allies veto power over key decisions.
The bold move reflects the Shi'ite group's push to consolidate the political power it gained after its self-proclaimed victory in its summer war with Israel."

"Murder Squad to quiz father after five die in blaze"
Last updated at 09:01am on 2nd November 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Murder squad detectives were waiting to interview a father of five last night after his wife and four daughters died in their blazing home.
Mohammed Riaz, 40, was unconscious after suffering severe burns in the fire, which was deliberately started at the family's end-of-terrace house early yesterday.
Neighbours revealed that he had been struggling to come to terms with the terminal illness of his only son, Adam, whom he had visited in hospital hours before the blaze.
It claimed the lives of his wife Caneze, 39, and daughters Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 15, Alisha, ten, and Hannah, three.
Police revealed that the doors to the house in Accrington, Lancashire, were locked from the inside - trapping the victims and forcing firemen to smash through a bay window. Mrs Riaz and her daughters were found dead in the same bedroom. Mr Riaz was critically ill in a specialist burns unit.
His 17-year-old son is receiving treatment for leukaemia and had been given three months to live."

Iraq police seize donkey laden with landmines on Iran border
AFP ^ | November 1 2006
Posted on 11/02/2006 2:52:17 AM PST by jmc1969
Iraqi forces have seized a donkey laden with land mines on the border with Iran, police in the border province of Diyala said Wednesday.
"Smugglers were bringing 52 mines from Iran on a donkey. When we intercepted them, the smugglers managed to escape back across the border but we got the donkey," an officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Iraq is in the throes of a violent sectarian conflict and US commanders accuse Iranian agents of supplying weapons to Shiite militia groups linked to Iraq's ruling parties.

Seventy two employees of Paris's main airport have lost their security clearance after an anti-terrorism investigation that they posed a security risk.
The employees - mainly aircraft cleaners or baggage handlers - are suspected by France's anti-terrorism co-ordination unit, Uclat, of having links with radical Islam, or of attending terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan.....
********According to Uclat, one was a friend of Richard Reid, the British "shoe bomber" who tried to blow up a flight from Paris to Miami in December 2001 and is serving a life sentence in the United States.**************
