Coalition, Iraqi Forces Detain Suspected Terrorists, Seize Weapons
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2006 Coalition and Iraqi forces detained nine suspected terrorists and seized numerous illegal weapons caches in operations over the last few days, military officials reported.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers found a weapons cache in a hidden storage area in a medical clinic near the citys center yesterday. Soldiers from Company C, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, seized 62 mortar rounds, six 94 mm rifle rounds, two 120 mm rocket warheads, about 200 fuss, 50 loose 7.62 mm ammunition rounds, 50 electrical blasting caps, two rocket-propelled-grenade launchers, seven RPG rounds, about 6 pounds of homemade explosives and 2 pounds of dynamite.
Iraqi soldiers apprehended four suspected terrorists and seized a sizeable cache yesterday southeast of Kanan, Iraq. Soldiers from 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, found the suspects and the weapons while conducting an intelligence-driven operation targeting a suspected arms dealer and weapons cache, officials said. During the search, the soldiers came under sporadic small-arms fire as enemy fighters tried to flee the area. The cache included nearly 100 rounds of machine-gun ammunition, six RPGs, five grenades, bomb-making materials, propaganda material and three stolen cars.
Elsewhere in Diyala province yesterday, Iraqi police found a vehicle-borne bomb containing six 155 mm rounds near Balad Ruz.
Soldiers from Multinational Division Baghdads 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, confiscated a Draganov sniper rifle, five AK-47 assault rifles and a PKC assault rifle in Saba Al-Bour, northwest of Baghdad.
On Nov. 7, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained three suspected terrorists and seized two AK-47 assault rifles during combat patrols near Mushada, north of Baghdad.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, seized illegal weapons after spotting a possible roadside bomb Nov. 7 north of Baghdad. Officials said the soldiers saw two people acting suspiciously near the site and called in an explosive ordnance disposal team. A search produced two AK-47 assault rifles, a 100-round drum of 7.62 mm ammunition, five 155 mm artillery rounds, seven AK-47 magazines and a hand grenade. The suspects were detained for questioning, and the EOD team destroyed the munitions.

"First Order of Business for Democrats: The Draft"
by Ray Robison
November 10th, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On January 8th of 2003, Congressman Charles Rangel [D-NY] began an extensive campaign to bring back the military draft. He repeatedly submitted legislative bills to begin a military draft and compel all American men and women up to the age of forty-two to serve two years of military service. Under the Republican-controlled Congress, such bills went down to defeat.
One of the few notable supporters of the draft was Congressman John Murtha [D-PA]. Congressman Murtha reportedly is preparing to campaign to take over the highly influential position of House Majority Leader. Congressman Rangel is set to take over the House Ways and Means Committee. Two proponents of a military draft will most likely take over two key leadership positions in the new Democrat-contolled House. Surely they were not lying to America when they proposed a draft? They would not make such a serious proposal for a mere political cheap shot, would they?
As recently as last February of 2006, Rangel once again introduced draft legislation. In a press release he stated,
Every day that the military option is on the table, as declared by the President in his State of the Union address, in Iran, North Korea, and Syria, reinstatement of the military draft is an option that must also be considered, whether we like it or not, Congressman Rangel said. If the military is already having trouble getting the recruits they need, what can we do to fill the ranks if the war spreads from Iraq to other countries? We may have no other choice but a draft.
Congressman Rangel says that the requirements of continued war in Iraq would necessitate a draft."

Democrats are set to subpoena
LA Times ^ | 11/10/06 | Richard B. Schmitt and Richard Simon

WASHINGTON Rep. Ike Skelton knows what he will do in one of his first acts as chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the Democratic-led House: resurrect the subcommittee on oversight and investigations.
The panel was disbanded by the Republicans after they won control of Congress in 1994. Now, Skelton (D-Mo.) intends to use it as a forum to probe Pentagon spending and the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war.
It has been 12 years since Democrats were in control of both the House and Senate. But they are looking to make up for lost time, and in some cases, make the Bush administration and its business allies sweat.
With control of every committee in Congress starting in January, the new majority will inherit broad powers to subpoena and investigate. And that is expected to translate into wide-ranging and contentious hearings.
The agenda is likely to be dominated by the Iraq war, but could include probes into the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance, environmental policies and new prescription-drug program for seniors. Industries, such as oil companies, could also come under closer scrutiny.

"Germany extends mandate for 300 anti-terror troops"
10 November 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Berlin (dpa) - The German parliament on Friday voted to extend the mandate of about 300 troops serving in the United States-led anti-terror mission "Operation Enduring Freedom."
The Bundestag, parliament's lower chamber, reduced the number of troops which can potentially be deployed to 1,800 from the present 2,800."
I know what you mean- things that would otherwise get posted as a thread of their own that is searchable because it has keywords, instead only make it onto this thread where keywords would be pointless. So the material gets lost and it is hard to find it again when you need the info in a hurry. The only advantage to posting them in this format is if you search by date... but even that is something that is done better with single article posts.
"...and they all went to the toilet, one after the other."
Thanks freeperfromnj for that article.

Greensprings man calls it 'unacceptable means to an end'; 3 others admit guilt

EUGENE Greensprings resident Jonathan Paul pleaded guilty Thursday to arson and conspiracy to commit arson in a 1997 firebombing of a horse slaughterhouse in Redmond.
Paul, 40, also repudiated violence as a way to protect the environment or animals during a plea hearing with three other defendants in the new U.S. District Court here. All four had been arrested in the federal government's "Operation Backfire" investigation of Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front activities beginning in fall 1996 and continuing through fall 2001.

"'Spider Girl' gang held in Chile"
By Jane Chambers
BBC News, Santiago
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Police have arrested two members of one of Chile's most notorious gangs, known as the Spider Girls.
The all-girl gang of teenagers were infamous for climbing up buildings in Santiago to burgle luxury apartments.
In a spate of high-profile robberies in 2005, they made off with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.
Their arrests have sparked off a debate about the country's judicial system as juveniles, under the age of 18, receive lower sentences."
