LONDON -- Two British men, one charged with plotting a terrorist training camp in Oregon, may be extradited to the United States, a court ruled Thursday.
Lawyers for Haroon Rashid Aswat and Babar Ahmad argued that, despite U.S. assurances, there was a risk that the men would be mistreated, or tried and sentenced as enemy combatants.
Dismissing the appeal, Lord Justice John Laws said that argument "would require proof of a quality entirely lacking here." The court did not immediately rule on whether the two men could appeal the decision to the House of Lords, Britain's highest tribunal.
Ahmad faces charges of supporting terrorism, conspiring to kill Americans and running a Web site used to fund terrorists.
Aswat is accused of plotting to set up a camp near the Klamath County town of Bly, to train fighters for war in Afghanistan.
Ahmad, who was arrested in London in August 2004 and indicted in Connecticut a few months later, is accused of running several Web sites including one that investigators say was used to recruit members for al-Qaida, Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime and Chechen rebels.
Aswat was arrested in Zambia shortly after the July 7, 2005, London transit bombings and deported to Britain, where he was detained under a U.S. warrant.

"The Ghost of Philip Agee"
By Kenneth R. Timmerman
FrontPageMagazine.com | November 30, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Ghost of Philip Agee rides again.
The former CIA operations officer who made a second career out of exposing CIA undercover operatives and operations in the 1970s and the 1980s may not be dead yet, but his legacy lives on.
It has been picked up by a left-wing European parliamentarian from Sicily named Claudio Fava.
Agees scandalous book, Inside the Company: CIA Diary, was published in 27 different languages and exposed the names of more than 250 covert operations officers. Agee was stripped of his U.S. citizenship in 1979 His actions prompted Congress to pass the Intelligence Identities Protection Act in 1982.
Soviet intelligence files published by former KGB archivist Vasili Mitrokhin and Christopher Andrew in The Sword and the Shield: The Mitrokhin Archive and the Secret History of the KGB, revealed that Agee received help from the KGB and from Cuban intelligence in his efforts to undermine the CIA and expose CIA covert operations. Today, Agee lives in Castros Cuba.
Claudio Fava has not needed to go so far afield. His anti-CIA operation has been funded and championed by the European Parliament.
Since January 2006, Fava has been the driving force behind the European Parliament commission to investigate CIA secret prisons and extraordinary renditions in Europe.
On Tuesday, Favas commission released a draft report that vigorously condemned the United States for apprehending terrorists on European soil and transporting them to secret prisons around the world.
The report called for the closure of the U.S.-run interrogation and detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and for European countries to accept the return of their citizens and residents who are being held illegally by US authorities. It also revealed (revealed?) that the governments of eleven European who granted landing rights and provided intelligence and police assistance to the CIA in apprehending suspected terrorists were aware of what they were doing.
One would certainly hope so.
Fava is a former journalist, in addition to being a leading member of Democrats of the Left, which is allied to Italys Socialist party. Those skills stood him in good stead as he compiled an impressive and compelling investigative file on CIA covert operations in Europe that he released to the public on Tuesday."
Well now, this sure doesn't sound nice.

Halt enquiry or we cancel Eurofighters
Telegraph.co.uk ^ | 12-1-06 | Christopher Hope
Posted on 11/30/2006 10:10:33 PM PST by xtinct
Saudi Arabia has given Britain 10 days to halt a fraud investigation into the country's arms trade - or lose a £10 billion Eurofighter contract.
The contract supports up to 50,000 British jobs and there are now fears that the deal may go to France.
The Saudi government is on the verge of cancelling the contract - an extension of one brokered by Margaret Thatcher 20 year ago - because of a Serious Fraud Office investigation into allegations of a slush fund for members of the Saudi royal family, according to authoritative sources.
Tony Blair has been told that the deal faces the axe in 10 days unless he intervenes to bring the two-year investigation to a close.
The Saudis are said to be "outraged" by the probe into the activities of companies linked to BAE Systems. The investigation concerns alleged illegal payments made to members of the Saudi royal family and their agents.

Financial Web Sites Warned Of Muslim Net Attack
More Internet Jihad. From WCBSTV.com, with thanks to Twostellas:
(CBS/AP) WASHINGTON The government issued an alert Thursday to U.S. stock market and banking Web sites about a possible Internet attack from a radical Muslim group, but said the threat was unconfirmed and seemed to pose no immediate danger.
The notice was issued after officials noticed a posting on a "Jihadist Web site" calling for an attack on American financial web sites in December, said Homeland Security Department spokesman Russ Knocke.
"There is no information to corroborate this aspirational threat," Knocke said, adding that the alert was issued "as a routine matter and out of an abundance of caution. There is no immediate threat to our homeland at this time."
The Web site calls for attacks against American economic sites in retaliation for Muslims being held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which houses prisoners accused of ties to terrorism groups, said another government official.
The site called for attackers to use viruses that can penetrate Internet sites and destroy data stored there.

Online jihadists launch "e-jihad" attack on Vatican website
Showing once again an inclination to respond to the Pope's overtures to dialogue with a slap on the face. "Online terrorists launch 'e-jihad' attack on Vatican website," from israelinsider, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
The Vatican website came under attack today in an effort organized by the leadership of 'electronic jihad' to down the site.
The online Islamist terrorists, or e-jihadists, distributed programs to dozens of hackers around the world in order to stage a multi-pronged attack on the site as Pope Benedict XVI visited the Islamic nation of Turkey....
Today's attack on the website of the Holy See was cited in part as a response to the Pope's comments and anger related to his conciliatory visit to Turkey. In a speech during the visit the Pontiff declared that religious leaders must 'utterly refuse to sanction recourse to violence as a legitimate expression of religion', and referred to the situation in the Middle East as 'disturbing'.
The cyberattack that came in the wake of the Pope's visit was successfully thwarted by Vatican authorities.
One blogger, noting that the website withstood the attack, remarked, "Kudos to the Swiss Guards of the cybersphere for doing an excellent job."

Home Office staff can join Islamic extremists
The Daily Mail ^ | 30th November 2006
Posted on 12/01/2006 1:51:48 AM PST by Mrs Ivan
Home Office staff are free to be members of the Islamic extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, it was revealed yesterday.
Those working in the department responsible for immigration and homeland security do not even have to declare membership of the fanatical organisation, the Government admitted.
This means Home Secretary John Reid has no idea how many of his staff hold the group's radical views and he has no means of monitoring their activities.
The revelation - in a written parliamentary answer - comes after Home Office IT manager Abid Javaid, 41, was found to be a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, which supports a worldwide Islamic state run under hardline Sharia law and has refused to condemn last year's London bombings.
Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green said: "This is really shocking. It is a dereliction of duty for them not to find out how many more Hizb ut-Tahrir members are on the Home Office payroll."
