Kenyan paper says Islamist letters led to US alert
Monday 27 November 2006
(NAIROBI) A U.S. warning of possible suicide attacks in Kenya and Ethiopia was prompted by the discovery of two letters signed by Somalias most influential hardline Islamist leader, a Kenyan newspaper said on Sunday.
Washington issued its warning to U.S. citizens on Nov. 2, in response to what it said were "terrorist threats emanating from extremist elements within Somalia". But a State Department spokesman gave no details on how those threats were presented.
The Sunday Nation newspaper said it had obtained two letters purportedly signed by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, who appears on U.S. and U.N. terrorism lists, but it could not establish the authenticity of the documents.

US: Oklahoma Mosque Members Support Al Qaeda
November 25, 2006
News from Oklahoma, in the form of a video from News 9. Jamal Miftah (pictured) is a recent migrant to the United States. He wrote a letter to the Tulsa World newspaper after seeing a video by Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second in command of Al Qaeda.
SNIP from article:
His letter was impassioned, but it was well-intentioned. He said that Muslims throughout the world should stand up to those who advocate jihad, and to decry such behavior as being against Islam. But the letter caused only recriminations at his mosque, the Islamic Center at Tulsa.
He was threatened by several members. He protested, and then was told by the management of the mosque that he cannot return until he has apologized.

Rio thieves armed with grenades rob tourists
Nov 26, 2006
Thieves armed with automatic rifles and military-issue grenades robbed a busload of British tourists in Rio de Janeiro before dawn on Sunday, the latest incident in a wave of violent crime plaguing Brazil's seaside tourist mecca.
Police said four armed men pretending to be police stopped the tour bus as it pulled into an upscale neighborhood in the southern part of the city.
At least 18 British tourists who had just arrived in Brazil were robbed, losing their luggage, passports and cash. One tourist who resisted was hit in the head with the butt of a rifle but was not seriously hurt, police said.
The robbery took place near Rio's famed Ipanema beach, a swanky area where police and drug traffickers squared off in a prolonged shootout this week that sent tourists ducking for cover.
Two days later a prominent socialite was shot and killed by a teenage assailant on a bicycle as she pulled up to a stoplight in Leblon, another glitzy beach neighborhood popular with tourists.
Nestled between lush mountains covered in tropical vegetation and the Atlantic ocean, Rio has long been Brazil's most popular tourist destination. But it also has one of the highest murder rates in the world, prompting some travel agencies to warn tourists that it might be safer to vacation elsewhere.

Anglican Priest Killed in Uganda
By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries
MUBENDE, UGANDA (ANS) -- An Anglican Priest named Rev. Godfrey Tabura killed at Kyenda in Mubende District on Saturday evening, the 25th of November. He was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while riding home on a motorcycle.
This was revealed in a story from SMV News Service in which they said, The gunmen's motive was to kill the priest. Whoever did it, reportedly fled without stealing anything. It leads to the suspicion that it is definitely a Christian persecution. The Rev. Godfrey Tabura was trailed from Musozi.
The story said that Benson Oyo Nyeko, the police chief of the Central Region in Uganda told to the SVM News Service that the incident occurred near Kyenda, which about 10 miles away from Mubende town at about 7.00 pm.
The priest was shot in the chest and died instantly. The Police suspect the killer or killers used an SMG rifle, Benson Oyo Neyiko said.
We dont think the thugs were looking for money. They never picked anything and even abandoned the motorcycle at the scene, which makes us suspect that the motive was murder, Neyiko added.
No arrests had been made by Sunday evening, but the investigations of the police was launched quickly. CID officer of Mubende reached the spot and started an immediate inquiry.

I understand your concern.
OPINION: I could not understand why President Bush felt the need to go to Indonesia. I cannot understand why the Pope feels the need to go to Turkey. The security risks were/are high; and what is accomplished by either trip is lost on me.
