Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

"Town that breeds suicide bombers"
The Daily Telegraph ^ | November 25, 2006 | Fiona Govan

Posted on 11/25/2006 4:24:33 AM PST by MadIvan

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Their destination may be almost 3,000 miles away, but the draw of martyrdom in Iraq is proving irresistable for the young men of Tetouan.

American intelligence officials believe that the Moroccan town, less than 30 miles from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, has become one of the world's most fertile recruiting ground for jihadists.

In the last eight months a group of young men, all worshippers at the same mosque, have left their homes to become suicide bombers in Iraq.

After DNA tests on their bodies, and Moroccan authorities asking families to provide samples, US intelligence traced at least nine of those responsible for recent suicide missions in and around Baghdad to Tetouan and its surrounding area in the foothills of the Rif Mountains.

Local reports suggest that another 21 individuals have left the area to seek martyrdom, following in the footsteps of five other Tetouanis who blew themselves up in a Madrid suburb when cornered by police, who believed they played a part in the train bombings in the Spanish capital in March 2004.

The families of the young men, all in their twenties, tell the same stories – of sons, brothers, husbands who became disillusioned with the daily struggle to earn.

Early each morning Abdelmonem Amakchar El Amrani, 21, would leave the home that he shared with his wife and infant daughter to travel 30 miles to work as a porter hauling merchandise across the border between Morocco and Ceuta. On a good day he could make four or five trips, earning around £3 a time.

When he arrived home exhausted each evening he would talk of his dream of making the short journey across the Mediterranean to Spain, where he would build a life for himself before sending for his family.

Earlier this year he began spending more time at the mosque, grew a beard and one day disappeared.

The first the family learnt of his fate was when police informed them that on March 6 he had driven a car bomb into a funeral procession, killing six and wounding 27 in the Iraqi city of Bakuba, 35 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Like many of the other men, he lived in Jamaa Mezuak, one of the poorest districts of Tetouan, where unemployment and illiteracy are high, and many houses in the labyrinthine streets have no running water. Young men loiter on street corners in groups of four and five, selling contraband cigarettes and hashish from the nearby mountains.

"This part of Morocco is a place of misery, of poverty, unemployment and a place devoid of hope," said Aissa Acharki, a prominent member of Justice and Spirituality, a controversial Islamic political party which promotes non-violence and understanding between different religions.

"That so many of these men are choosing to become martyrs in Iraq is shocking but we should not be surprised that they are making this choice."

He believed that the region's proximity to Europe creates a state of mental torture in the young. "They watch western television, they follow the Spanish football league, they look at the style of life that people have over there and they become frustrated.

"The idea of reaching paradise through martyrdom is becoming increasingly attractive. This is promoted by imams in some of the mosques and prepares them for the call to jihad."

Acharki, like others in the town, believed that the men were persuaded to join the insurgents through extremist literature on the internet and DVDs distributed secretly across town by agents of extremist groups in Algeria.

The fact that all nine suspected of being suicide bombers worshipped in the Daawawa Tabligh mosque has caused the imam to become very protective of his activities and aggressive to those asking questions."

"Rainier Valley barber shop owner flees U.S.
Facing sentencing in plea deal, he phones FBI to say he's in Somalia"

By PAUL SHUKOVSKY
P-I REPORTER

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Ruben Shumpert, who federal agents allege made his Rainier Valley barber shop a kind of "anti-American training ground for Muslims" where children were taught "how to shoot and fight the Americans," has telephoned the FBI to say he won't be going to prison anytime soon.

Shumpert, who faces sentencing on federal counterfeiting and weapons charges, has fled to Somalia.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Shumpert, who is also known as Amir Abdul Muhaimin, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Redkey said. He was to be sentenced Tuesday.

Shumpert -- an African American convert to Islam -- was among more than a dozen, mostly African immigrants from Islamic countries arrested by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force two years ago on a mix of charges, including immigration fraud and bank fraud.

Shumpert was never charged with any terrorism crimes, but court documents paint a picture of his barber shop at 7821 Rainier Ave. S. as a gathering place for adherents of radical Islam where he showed children videotapes of "fighting, shooting and killing with images on Shumpert's computer screen of al-Qaida and the Taliban.""

"Leader of area mosque arrested by U.S. agents
Terrorism task force grabs Somali native, but immigration cited"

By JOHN IWASAKI
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The respected leader of a Rainier Valley mosque was arrested Monday on an immigration charge, surprising those who knew his work in Seattle's Somali community.

Federal agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Abu Abrahim Sheik Mohamed at Sea-Tac Airport as he got off a domestic flight, federal criminal justice sources said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lorie Haley said only that Mohamed, 37, was "in custody on immigration violations" and is being held at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma."

The last person to meet Alexander Litvinenko before he succumbed to the agonising effects of radioactive poisoning is a self-professed expert in nuclear materials.

International 'security consultant' Mario Scaramella, who joined Litvinenko for the now infamous clandestine meeting in a London sushi bar, headed an organisation which tracked dumped nuclear waste, including Soviet nuclear missiles left over from the Cold War.

U.S. Border Agent Briefly Held in Mexico
Breitbart ^ | 11/25/2006 | Associated Press

Posted on 11/25/2006 7:13:42 PM PST by NapkinUser

An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was jailed for more than a day after Mexican border officials found 650 rounds of ammunition in his car, authorities said Saturday.

The unidentified agent was arrested Thursday as he entered Mexico at the San Luis Port of Entry in southwest Arizona, and was released late Friday and returned to the United States, Mexican and U.S. authorities said.

Mexican Customs inspectors found a bag containing 650 rounds of .40- caliber ammunition in the agent's 2006 Nissan Altima, Mexican authorities said. Possessing firearms or ammunition in Mexico is illegal and large warning signs are posted at border crossings.

Lloyd Easterling, a Border Patrol spokesman, said the agent was assigned to the agency's Yuma sector, but declined to release his name. He said officials worked with Mexican authorities to secure his release.

"Yemen Jails Journalist Over Blasphemous Cartoons"
Khaled Al-Mahdi, Arab News

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SANAA, 26 November 2006 — A Yemeni court yesterday sentenced an editor to one year in prison and imposed a six-month ban on his weekly newspaper for reprinting controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Kamal Al-Olufi, editor in chief of the Al-Rai Al-Aam newspaper was found guilty of publishing blasphemous material.

The drawings, first published by the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper in September last year, were seen in the Muslim world as blasphemously depicting the prophet and triggered protests throughout the Muslim world.

Olufi was taken to jail shortly after the verdict was pronounced.

He and editors of English-language Yemen Observer and the Arabic-language Al-Hurya weeklies had originally been brought before the court in mid-February and charged with “publishing blasphemous drawings offending the Prophet and Islamic religion.”

Yemeni law prohibits the dissemination of any material seen as offending religions.

Meanwhile, 13 men reportedly having links to Al-Qaeda terrorist activities have escaped from a prison in northwestern Yemen, it was reported yesterday."

"India Awakes to Vital Installation Threat as Separatists Continue to Attack Railway"
By Animesh Roul

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On Nov 20, at least seven people were killed and over 50 others injured in a powerful bomb blast inside a compartment of the Haldibari-Siliguri Passenger train at Belacoba station in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district. Investigations suggested that the explosive was kept inside a vegetable sack inside the toilet of the compartment. Reports also indicated that four more live bombs were found in the train. Police sources suspected the involvement of separatist militant groups active in that region: the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).

It is highly possible that this blast has a Bangladeshi connection. Islamic militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) could be involved with either of the outfits triggering the blast.

On November 23, a blast outside the railway station in Guwahati, Assam, took four lives (including a 18 month child) with at least ten people injured. Police suspected RDX was used by ULFA to trigger the bomb blast. The device was planted in a cycle-rickshaw and detonated by the programmable timed device (PTD).

However, in both blasts, investigating agencies are still groping in the dark and yet to reach a plausible explanation."

TERRORISM FOCUS
"New al-Qaeda Threats Issued Against Indian Infrastructure"
By Animesh Roul

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A recent disclosure by the Indian security forces revealed that al-Qaeda affiliated militant groups are devising novel, radical and spectacular plots against India's critical infrastructure. The synchronized July 11 Mumbai train bombings carry the hallmarks of an al-Qaeda-style operation. Again, in late August, reports of two armed militants breaching security at the Kakarapar nuclear power complex in Gujarat prompted India's nuclear facilities to be placed under heightened security measures (Terrorism Focus, September 12). While the threat of al-Qaeda's presence in India looms large with every passing day, India's security agencies are grappling with the new dangers posed by local Islamist terrorists emboldened by al-Qaeda's tactics and ideology."
