Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean defended U.S. Sen. John Kerry on Wednesday, dismissing as "bloopers" remarks Kerry made that were construed by some to be insulting to American troops.
"Kerry made a blooper. Bloopers happen," the former Vermont governor told reporters.
On Monday, Kerry told a group of students that people unable to succeed in the U.S. educational system would likely "get stuck in Iraq."
The White House has called on Kerry to apologize for the statement, and Kerry has faced fallout elsewhere, too. A Democratic congressional candidate in Iowa canceled a campaign event with him, and Kerry himself canceled one for a Democratic candidate in Minnesota.
Dean's comments about Kerry came as he wrapped up a two-day swing through his home state, where he endorsed lieutenant governor candidate Matt Dunne on Tuesday.
He also expressed optimism about Democrats' chances of winning control of Congress in Tuesday's elections and took aim at President Bush's administration, comparing it to that of President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew.
"I think there's a lot of similarities between Nixon-Agnew and Bush-Cheney," he said, saying both used the Internal Revenue Service for political purposes.
Dean said he had visited several "red states" in the West as part of the Democratic effort to regain control in mid-term elections and that he planned to close out the campaign with stops in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Pennsylvania. He was to fly to Chicago after speaking to reporters at Vermont Democrats' headquarters in Burlington.
Dean said he's confident his party will win a majority in the House of Representatives, and said a victory in Missouri could provide the margin for control of the Senate.
This just keeps getting better and better. I hope Dean keeps talking.
Oh no!! Can this get any better?
The longer the Dems talk about this - THE BETTER!
The blind leading the naked.
The MSM will keep putting out excuses until they find one that seems to work - then they'll all jump on it... Wait for the bandwagon -- it's coming.
Dean defends Kerry. Other Dems call for Kerry to apologize!
Excellent.
May they continue to dash themselves against one another.
Oh that's bloody hilarious.
Regards, Ivan
Big mouth dean needs to shut up!
"Bloopers Happen"
Gotta love the Deanster!!!!
Aren't these the same people who rake the President over the coals for his mispronunciations? Hypocrits.
This is even better than "thieves protecting thieves". Now the nutjob traitors are protecting each other...and throw in the MSM there too.
I was SO hoping that Dean would take Kerry's side...and we need Pelosi, Reid and Clinton to take his side also.
Speaking of bloopers, his parents made a big one about 50 years ago.
Bloopers happen.....and then you lose. Dean should know better than anyone.
Uh, Howard, that was the Clintons. Are you off your meds, again?
Well, the democratic base is so incredibly stupid, that they probably will believe it. You have to give Dean credit--he CAN rally his base (considering that the base has a room temp IQ).
Which reminds me,,,does anyone know what you call a democrat with 'half-a-brain'?
GIFTED.
It was a beautiful day when Howard Dean was made head of the DNC.
These ARE the same people that have made a HUGH deal about President Bush changing from "stay the course" to being "flexible"...
They nitpick every single WORD that comes out of Bush, Cheney and Rummy's mouths...but, Deany call this a BLOOPER.
