Kerry apologizes for "botched" Iraq joke

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.

Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.

Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."

A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."

While campaigning in California on Monday, Kerry told a college crowd: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Kerry's office said the senator had misread his prepared remarks. They said he had intended to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

Even if true that he was making fun of Bush's intellect, what exactly makes him so smart? Did he have great grades?
Did he go to a prestigious law or business school?
What has he done?
Seriously, what has he ever done? Has he ever run a business? Ever wrtiiten a bill that was passed?
He acts as if he the smartest one in the room, but what is the evidence of that?
From what I can tell, he has spent his life leaching off other people's work. He even had a wealthy uncle pay his way in to those fancy schools, I guess even his father was a do-nothing.

this is the 2nd friggin re-write they have made in 24 hours!

Does anyone in the media pay attention to this stuff?

first they add the "getting us" line....a day later they "discover" the "just ask Pres. Bush" line at the end of the printed text.

Dear lord, I feel like I'm living in some Orwellian 1984.
It is so painfully obvious these guys are making it up as they go along...and everyone is giving them a pass.

If George Bush had said this, do you think anyone near a teleprompter would be bending over backwards to rephrase his words for him?

This is only an apology for not being funny...nothing to the troops.

He is sorry he botched the joke, not that he called the troops stupid...

His apologies to his wife probably sound like this.

"Teresa, I misspoke. You aren't a bit@h. I meant to call Bush a bit@h."

Call your own Senators and Reps -- preferably in the DC office - RAT or GOP. Be demanding of the RAT offices -- affirm or repudiate the Kerry remarks. GOP offices, just let them know you are angry and motivated.

This is NOT an apology for the slur to the military - it wasn't a "botched joke" either as evidenced by the context in which he was speaking (to students, not politicians). Kerry has a history since 1971 of slandering the military - treason then, treason now, nothing has changed. The American military isn't stupid and neither are those of us who are so very grateful that these men and women are willing to lay down their lives for our country and freedoms. Kerry is a pariah and should be treated like one for the rest of his miserable life.

Kerry, shut the f--- up. Even if that was the line you were supposed to say, you had lower grades in college than Bush AND you were proven to be a coward in the military.

Scary to think the 2004 Presidential Election was even close with this man as a candidate.

He is just going through the five stages:

DENIAL - Denying that's what he was saying.
ANGER - For being so stupid - there goes my 2nd chance at President (unfortunately this helps Hillary Rodham)
BARGAINING - What would a Clinton do? Maybe they'll (public) believe it's a right wing conspriacy.
DEPRESSION - "Oh NO! - the public's not buying it!
ACCEPTANCE - Some kind of Mickey Mouse apology so that he can always say he apologized.

Where's the apology?

Since the story is Reuters, I'll assume they just made that apology part up.

Grandpa Dave, did you design the Karl Rove Remote Ventriloquism Machine graphic? I laughed myself silly!

Managed to keep my coffee off the laptop, thankfully!
