WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.
Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.
Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."
A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."
While campaigning in California on Monday, Kerry told a college crowd: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Kerry's office said the senator had misread his prepared remarks. They said he had intended to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

Daschle also stepped in "it," when he tried to demean folks who believed in Missile defense.
It seems that Dems end up looking like idiots when they try to paint Republicans as idiots.

Now we get the Rats, Mediots and DU to realize that Kerry is our long time Manchurian Troll, controlled by Karl Rove.
Kerry's Dem PR machine in the pretend media are nothing but posers.

Even those without an education could see that this couldn't have been a botched joke but was his true words with true meaning.
AND, Bush was a jet pilot - heck, 16 year old kids can pilot a boat of that size.
also, if this is a standard, printed stump speech with prepared text and written "jokes", the Kerry team will surely have video of him reading this prepared joke in a previous setting..right?
It should be fairly easy to find video of him using this "Just ask Pres. Bush" ha ha hehe joke sometime in the last month...
Unless of course Kerry was speaking off the cuff and accidently let slip what he really thinks.

So, I guess he's saying if you don't study, if you aren't smart, and if you're intellectually lazy, you can end up getting elected and reelected President -- but only if you are lucky enough to run against not one, but two opponents who are even dumber and intellectually lazier than you?
Everyone should call their congress critters & demand that they rebuke what kerry said.
Kerry took the coward's way out.
He pretended to apologize on an early morning show which no one listens to.

You're NOT crazy. Kerry just wants to make you think you are. I want that man to keep on talkin'. The more he talks the more clearly we see the man behind the suit.
That's exactly what they're doing. The Traitor never will.. ..hell, he hasn't yet apologized for his remarks from 35 years ago.
hey if Bush's poor grades got us stuck in Iraq how would kerry's lower grades fix it?
