BBC: Surprise gift ~~ Comments on John Kerry's comments...

The Reporters: US mid-terms

George Bush and Dick Cheney have been working overtime (and racking up air miles) to rally conservative stalwarts in the final days before the elections, and on Monday they got a gift from an unexpected source: John Kerry.

kerry_ap203b.jpgAs the president was telling the good people of Texas that the Democrats did not want to win in Iraq, his former rival was in California insulting the troops.

Or so Mr Bush and his spokesman would have us believe. And when you review Mr Kerry’s comment, it’s hard to argue:

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq," he said, eliciting chuckles from the students.

The president demanded an apology, and some furious military bloggers also pounced, calling Mr Kerry a disgrace.

Senator Kerry came out swinging in response, saying he had botched a joke aimed at the president - and that he would apologise to no-one for his criticism. But his tough talk reminded me of an old political maxim: If you're explaining, you're losing.

John Kerry clearly thinks he is going to run for president again in 2008. If he doesn’t have jokes funnier than this, he's going to lose again. And in the meantime, he's not doing his party any favours this year.

what is this crap .. " ...anyone who thinks a veteran would insult the ... troops... is crazy"

Anyone who doesn't think that a ACTIVE member of the military who testified before Congress insulting and betraying the men he served with, who he'd abandoned at the first (self-generated) opportunity, would 35 years later insult those presently serving is a maroon.

If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq...
...they must have been reading "The Winter Soldier" or the Congressional Record from about 35 years ago...

Hillary's Tivo is replaying JFK's boo-boo all night long. Another Democrat Presidential contender is lying in the ditch.

Kind of bears out Novack's description of Kerry's redundancy at the press conference--not to mention getting the whole bit about insulting the troops. Can't wait to see what the evil GOP et al come up with on that gem.

KERRY: And I'm not going to stand for this anymore; period. That's the apology that people ought to get.

His whole "statement" makes no sense whatever. I wonder if he's insane.

Yup..I guess his "nuanced" explanation of his own stupidity didn't have gravitas.

LOL! Or maybe it had too much gravitas and that's why it fell flat.

No doubt about it -- john kerry must resign immediately! He has demoralized our fighting men in time of war and can no longer be trusted to vote on wartime measures in Congress. Resign, john kerry, or face censure!

The real deal is Kerry just forgot that "some people just can't tell a joke."

LOL

LOL! Well said.

Obviously, he should leave joke-telling out of his campaign routine.

He is insane. Insanely jealous that GWB is the POTUS and he isn't and never will be. He is obsessed with hatred for GWB.

"Americans would do well by boycotting Mass. lobster and whatever else the Ted and John show has to sell.

Boycott Massachusetts!!"

No No. They are the gift that keeps on giving. Dukakis helmut photo, Kerry, Ted.

Give them the mike and start the film rolling.

You know what's telling in all of this? You hear John Kerry off mouthing off about the President, insulting him, attempting to belittle him... and then you look at the way that President has held himself these last few years.

President Bush has more class in any given finger than John Kerry has in sum. You never hear him insulting his opponents or resorting to miserable name-calling.

And you can bet that he wouldn't act indignant if he ever made a gaffe like Kerry claims that he did. Bush knows full-well that he'd lose all support from his base if he behaved the way that Kerry has. Meanwhile, Kerry doesn't fear a thing from his base, which is to of course imply the obvious.

You know, even if I disagree with a man, if carries himself with dignity, with conviction, and with honor, I can respect him. I thought that was common civility, but apparently common civility is all too uncommon on the leftist side of the aisle.
