John Kerry certainly came out swinging at Republicans with his press conference on Tuesday, and while the TV airwaves and Web logs are now ablaze with commentary, Robert Novak cut through the hoopla on Fox News with this simple statement: "I think the biggest damage was done to his presidential campaign because I dont think he looked very presidential with his performance.
Novak also opined that it was never a good idea to "let politicians ad-lib too much ... particularly when theyre like John Kerry.
He explained that Kerry, while in Los Angeles, "sees all these kids there and he says, You gotta study. Whats the worst thing that can happen to you if you dont study? You get stuck in Iraq.
"He wasnt trying to insult the troops, he was trying to make a point and it was stupid, said Novak. "Now, there are two things [Kerry] could have done. He could have said, I apologize, I misspoke, or he could go on the offensive. Why did he go on the offensive?
"He has been under terrific criticism inside the Democratic Party for not reacting more vigorously to the Swift Boat attacks on him. This is something he lives with every day.
Novak added that Kerry said twice in his press conference that he wasnt going to "let this happen again, meaning, according to Novak, "Im not going to be a weakling again.
Fox News anchor Jane Skinner said that it looked like we werent going to get "what some people were hoping for even if it wasnt an apology ... maybe an admission that everyone is misunderstanding him.
Novak said, "One of the press conference questions was would he express regret ... hes not going to do that. This whole business of the Swift Boat veterans is something that weighs on him. He thinks that if he had reacted more vigorously hed be president of the United States right now.
"I dont think its true, but John Kerry thinks its true and therefore there is this almost hysterical mode where he repeats himself over and over and over again. I really believe it hurt his presidential prospects.
Is this a "meltdown" or not?
No.... He's been well beyond "hysterical" for some time.
"You cannot take my 30 year pattern of Anti-American treasonous behavior and pablum and then take my last Anti-troop comments and insinuate that Im anti...er...er..nevermind"
Kerry's press conference was down right Nixonian. His problem is that he does not fake indignation well.
I say give him some coffee and a lot of sugar. I'd like to see him continue this insane diatribe. The public should be more aware how the elitist left thinks.
No one is going to buy this explanation that Kerry meant to insult Bush, saying if you don't get a good education you'll end up getting us stuck in Iraq. Bush has a Harvard MBA for crap's sake. Or is Kerry going to turn this around to say he meant to insult Harvard graduates, not the troops? Spare me.
Yeah, right! Next, I'll be told that I can buy some ocean-front property in Arizona!
I think you have half the issue down. It's not that he fakes indigination badly. It's that his indignation is fake. He truly believes that the SWIFTIES were lying about him, from what I can tell. He is so narcissistic and deranged that he accepts his version of history as the truth, facts notwithstanding.
So he truly feels outraged. But the outrage is based on falsehoods, and it shows.
One Freeper on another thread put it quite well, this is Kerry's "jumping the shark" moment.
Kerry couldn't respond to the Swift Boat Vets because he knew what they were saying was absolutely true.
Go 'head you lying, traitorous prick, get aggressive all you want.
The response reminded me of Clinton's so-called righteous indignation with Chris Wallace, becoming a blow-hard and redfaced at Chris Wallace's question. Same thing. Get mad and don't answer the question. The Dems playbook, by the look of it. Vapid. Shallow. So DNC.
Right, and the French will never surrender again.
As Granny used to say: "It's done, stick a fork in it"
John...you are done...beyond ripe...stick a fork in it. Suck it up. Say you are sorry. Then, please just go away. Wait...DO RUN IN 08!
