Vietnam Airlines plans to double its fleet to 86 planes by 2015 to meet increasing passenger demand, state media reported Saturday.

The plan has been submitted to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for approval, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted Vietnam Airlines General Director Nguyen Xuan Hien as saying.

The national carrier has ordered 10 Airbus A321 planes, with the first delivery expected in January.

It has also agreed to purchase four Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with the first delivery scheduled in 2010.

Under the plan, the airline will purchase an additional 19 aircraft beginning in 2012 and will lease 10 others, Hien said.

Say what you want about Vietnam, but the country is one of the fastest-growing economic countries in the world.

They're communist in name only.

YES. My sister was there and from what she said.. I say that an army of Starbucks and McDonalds will conquer Vietnam. Don't know about their nerves or waist line tho'. They are also catering heavily towards tourists and if a Vietnamese person harms a tourist they are double punished because it gives the country a bad rep.

China has pioneered a flavor of communism that is based on two pillars: economic success (even predation) and an absolute throttle-hold on people's liberties. Vietnam is following suit. Don't let Vietnam's increasingly-bulging bank accounts fool you: this is as illibertarian a regime as just about any. You have to go to North Korea to find a regime more disdainful of liberty.

It was one of the most capitalistic places I've ever been, and I've been everywhere. On a drive from Saigon to the Mekong delta its almost wall to wall shops.

You want real communism, go to Laos, its pretty, but desperately poor.

The Russians, under Putin, are also trying to create a similar setup.

The Chinese and Vietnamese are natural capitalists. The Russians, on the other hand, are congenitally stupid when it comes to economics.

I hope to visit Vietnam over the next few years. Have friends who were in Hue last year who raved about it.

Remember, that a large share of the population in Vietnam was not even born when the last American left.

only problem for the commies is that once you have a middle class created, the governments have much less of an ability to throttle-hold people's liberties.

It may be a slow process, but just like with China and Russia, once they get a taste of capitalism, its like a snowballl running down the hill. Slowly, but surely, the ones with the money gain power, and the politicians less of it.

Communism today comes mostly in a hybrid form as in China. Few are holding on to the strict economic aspects of this philosophy. It's not real capitalism and it's not really a free state. The same heads that always were in power still are in power usually. The same methods of operating exist when it comes to human rights, freedom, censorship, etc. In fact, most of the firms are only partially privatized, so that the state still has the say in the background. Many key industries and services are completely controlled by the state. Kangaroo courts, one party systems, with censorship of the media, and a state controlled economy can hardly be called a free market economy or state.

The Marxist has simply tried to incorporate some free market aspects into their state controlled economy. Former YU is another perfect example.

BTW, how many political parties exist besides the Communist one in Vietnam? Things have changed? Freedom in such a state is a façade to appease the masses and hopefully attract western capital and some of the more efficient business practices. But free?

Under the Nazi’s, and Saddam, you also had courts. They also had a Constitution, and even private businesses....... Were these free societies? Market economies? In centralized states where you have a government directing and all powerful, where there is no balance of powers between the branches of government, you do not have free societies or market economies. In such states, freedom is superficial and something people at best think they have. Decisions are made by the “one” party that has the power and no one tells them anything different. They pass laws and there is no opposition. The courts interpret the party policy, not the Constitution. Even North Korea has a Constitution: http://countrystudies.us/north-korea/58.htm But what does it say and how is it interpreted? In fact, who interprets it? Judges who were voted into office? Is there a Jury of the people? Nope.

Throwing around BS like Vietnam is privatizing, has a Constitution and legal system, etc, is an insult to any reasonable mans intellect. They are what they have been since the Communists have seized power, just today they are giving their centralized state controlled one party nation which steps on human rights, pisses on freedom, and despises the US, a slight capitalist spin. I asked before, and you were asked in another thread as well- Who runs Vietnam, what other parties are allowed other than the Communist party?

Bush to Vietnam bump.

Flew the ATR and A-320 with my daughter there in 2000, and could see it all coming!

The Furama Resort, Danang if you ever need a place to stay in central Vietnam.

Hey John....HOORAY! You are back! I tried to send a letter twice in the last couple of hours to plead for your return but the FReepmail came back...No such person...when I tried to FReepmail Administration Moderator or Moderator. I've been here 7 years and still cannot navigate the technical aspects of the forum.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I did wrong? Thanks in advance.

Slow learner? Big help I was...eh? Anyway, I am glad to see that you are back.
Thank you FreeRepublic!
