Was just about to post. More from Boston Herald site:
----

Celtic president Red Auerbach died today in Washington, D.C. The franchise patriarch was 89.
Team officials were preparing a release on the matter, but all that is known at the moment is that the franchise patriarch passed away suddenly, according to his daughter.
Auerbach had battled healthy problems regularly the past few years, but had always managed to bring himself back from the brink of the most severe trouble.
In compiling a 938-479 record, Auerbach coached the Celtics to nine NBA championships, including titles in his last eight seasons on the bench.

Wow. Three sports figures in one day. Red, Joe Niekro and Trevor Burbick.

I must admit I thought he had long past. I presumed his famous "bench statue" had been placed outside Faneuil Hall when he died.

Red Auerbach, who coached the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships in the 1950s and 1960s

That's nine championships in ten seasons, including eight in a row.

When my Dad retired at age 80, his co-workers asked what his sports fantasy would be. Dad said he'd like to interview Red Auerbach. He never expected this dream to come true. Red was gracious enough to allow the interview, and permit a local TV crew to tape it. Dad was flown to Washington, did his fantasy interview, and was able to see it televised in a 2-part feature on the local sports broadcast. He was given the tape of the full interview. Red gave Dad an hour of quality time. Whatever he did in the world of basketball, for me, this was the measure of the man.

I can just imagine Red is sitting down with Johnny Most up in Heaven to relive the old days. Thanks for everything, coach.
