TERRORIST group al-Qaeda is at risk of splintering into separate, even more extremist organisations, an academic said today.
Stuart Koschade, from the Queensland University of Technology's Centre for Social Change, said an inconsistency in values held by top al-Qaeda members risked even more violent groups emerging, as had happened in Iraq.
Speaking at a conference in Brisbane on social change, where more than 50 academics presented their research, Mr Koschade said inconsistencies had developed in the movement's message since its three main goals were set in 2001 by leader Osama bin Laden.
They were to organise ideological clarity, resist secular regimes within the Muslim world and to establish an Islamic state.
At the time, bin Laden talked about avoiding an internal war within Islam at all costs and declared all those waging jihad as brothers, Mr Koschade said.
But he said since then, al-Qaeda in Iraq had specifically disobeyed that doctrine and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who led al-Qaeda in Iraq until his death in June, had taken the group down an even more violent path, declaring war against Muslim Shi'ites.
He said if new leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri continued the same path of violence, the group could become a spin-off with a different set of ideals.

So does this mean Ossama is really dead?
From what I understand, US Marines with M24's are doing alot of the spliting....everytime an Al Qaeda member pokes his head over his roof cover. I suppose to Al Qaeda and the Lame Stream Press this is helping Al Qaeda, because everyone knows that two heads are better then one. (;
word is Shira Hilary has given Osma Obamah a starter division in hopes his startup mistakes will make her look better in 07'

"Sh_t! Now which faction do I join?"
1- Allah® is coming behind a comet and we need to drink the Kool-Aid
2- The Profit® is OK to be invested and draw interest
3- We do not need to blow ourselves up, there are women behind those bags
The internal struggles of Islam® continue to suffer from sectarian violence.
The use of the term "at risk" suggests that the writer might be sympathetic to the cause of these murderers. Perhaps whomever writes these articles could use more neutral phraseology.

This wouldn't have happened if we hadn't invaded Iraq. It's all Bush's fault.
That is the nature of such packs of dogs. The most vicious becomes the pack leader, the packs split up after a some size is reached. Common sense, really.
Shhhh... that is the October surprise.
I think we are going to find out that his remains were located in Tora Bora. I think we are going to find out he has been dead since that raid, and that he set things up to ensure we would not know it.
I love that pic and caption!!
They can't do it. The truth is that their hatred for rival Islamic sects transcends their hatred of us.
Like rats, they fight amongst each other. Let's hope they can keep themselves busy this way.
