"The 747-8's bought by British Airways will be designated 747-836 just as the earlier models were the 747-236 and 747-436."Yes, you're right. Actually, I also hear a lot of airlines refer to them as 472s, 473s, and 474s.
I was just funnin' with ya!

Well...I guess I did my part on both sides...:)

Your comparision seems to be reversed
- the "Goose" was built, but by that time noone wanted it.
The A380 is wanted, but they can't get them built.
But what the heck ... it sounds good !

Those wings are a little creepy. Amazing things are going to be done with composites.

I don't think that is necessary. My point was that the new 747 is much more fun to talk about than Airbust's Talousse Goose.

Yes....blah blah blah....
They're still creepy.

How magnanimous of Virgin to do this! It's still very bad news for Airbus. That's a LOT of deferred income for Airbus, and a lot of income right now for Boeing.
To: Gamecock; Paleo Conservative
There may be some truth to that, but I suspect (not knowing how these contracts are worded) that all the airlines who have ordered A380's are in the process of negotiating their 'slide down the delivery timeline', and how much it'll cost Airbus for the delays. Virgin's just announcing here that they finished the negotiations?
Wouldn't Virgin's 'agreement' to stick around until 2013 be binding on them at this point? I would think that they have a right to get out now if they wished, due to the delay(s), and they have chosen not to do so.
Translation: We're going to sit back and see if this lemon is really all that Airbus claims it is. If the program is still going in 2013 maybe we'll buy some.

I have this feeling that Virgin maybe wants to purchase 8-10 747-8I's before the end of this year.
To: SW6906
Hmm, I wasn't able to get to a press release on the Virgin site to see if they had any more info....

I would think that they have a right to get out now if they wished, due to the delay(s), and they have chosen not to do so. Singapore Airlines owns 49% of Virgin. What if they buy all of the slots Virgin has for firm orders for the A380. Virgin could convert their options to other planes like the new A350XWB without having to take delivery of any A380's.

That's certainly a possibility, PC, lotta negotiations goin' on for sure.
I guess my point was that this announcement isn't bad news for Airbus, it's good news in that they kept an airline in the fold (at least for now) who could have gone elsewhere.

The new wings on the 747-8I ( 800 ) will be raked wings instead of the winglets on the 747-400.
In addition to the raked wings, the wing will be lengthened a few feet.
Boeing found out that they can put raked wings on the 747 and still have the same economical benefits as the winglets, but, also, the wings will have more lifting capability.
That picture you saw of the 747, that is just a artist rendition of the 747, I doubt that the 747-8I wings will have that much wing flex.
To: RayChuang88
Wouldn't Virgin Atlantic's livery look great on a 747-8I ?

Don't be so sure.
With that much flex in a 446 I can see an 8 being exactly what's in the redition.
Plus, I don't think Boeing would have released that drawing were it not accurate.
To: Psycho_Bunny
That's what I read on ( Airliners.net ) by a few people.
But, then again, you'll be amazed how much they flexed ( Flex test ) when they tested the 747... I think they were able to flex it 27 feet before it broke.
To: norton
Yeah, that and the fact that Singapore Airlines owns 49% of Virgin and Singapore Airlines is the prime beneficiary of the delay. That's funny.
