Cardin Voted Against Stem Cell Research for Pure Political Gain

TEMPLE HILLS, MD – Today, Michael Steele released the following statement setting the record straight on stem cell research:

Michael Steele said, “There is only one candidate in this race who voted against stem cell research and it’s Congressman Ben Cardin. Ben Cardin had a chance to support stem cell research that would not destroy human embryos, and he voted against it – not because of his beliefs on the issue, but as a transparent political stunt. Both Senators Barbara Mikulski and Paul Sarbanes voted for this legislation. Ben Cardin wanted to politicize the issue instead of getting something done, so he voted against it. Marylanders deserve better than Congressman Cardin’s continued Washington double-talk, mistruths and sheer political gamesmanship on an issue as important as stem cell research.”

On September 6, 2006, the Frederick News Post reported: “[Cardin] opposes suggestions that stem cell research is acceptable if the embryo isn't destroyed. (Liam Farrell, “Pursuing Change,” Frederick News Post, September 2, 2006)

Michael Steele added, “I am an enthusiastic supporter of cord blood, adult stem cell and embryonic stem cell research that does not destroy the embryo, and I fully support expanding innovations in technology that make it possible to treat and prevent disease without the willful destruction of human embryos.”

Cardin Voted AGAINST Expanded Research On Stem Cells That Do Not Destroy Embryos.

Alternate Stem Cell Research Methods – Passage. “Barton, R-Texas, motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill that would require the National Institutes of Health to conduct and support research on the isolation, derivation and production of pluripotent stem cells that do not destroy human embryos. It would require the Health and Human Services secretary to issue final guidelines for additional stem cell research, with priority for research with the greatest potential to yield benefits in the near future, within 90 days of the bill's enactment.” (S. 2754, CQ Vote #380: Motion rejected. July 18, 2006, Cardin voted Nay) The Senate Voted Unanimously To Pass the Same Bill that Cardin voted AGAINST. Both Senators Mikulski and Sarbanes Voted In Favor Of The Bill.

Alternate Stem Cell Research Methods – Passage. Passage of the bill that would require the National Institutes of Health to conduct and support research to develop techniques for the isolation, derivation and production of pluripotent stem cells that do not destroy human embryos. It would require the Health and Human Services secretary to issue final guidelines for additional stem cell research, including a prioritization of research with the greatest potential to yield benefits in the near future, within 90 days of the bill's enactment.” (S. 2754, CQ Vote #205: July 18, 2006, Sarbanes voted Yea; Mikulski voted Yea)

Cardin knew this would come out, but he gambled that the sheeple would hear the Fox lie but not the Steele correction of the record. We are all witness to a crass political stunt. We shall see if it works.

Congratulations to the Steele campaign for being on top of this issue.

Question: What embryonic stem cell research is there that doesn't destroy a living embryo?

I wish the papers and MSM would say EMBRYONIC stem cell research and not just stem cell research. But, then, that would be telling the truth.

I think this letter by PanzerKardinal on another thread showcases Cardin's and Fox's hypocrisy.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research
Grand Central Station
P.O. Box 4777
New York, NY 10163

Dear Mr. Michael J. Fox;

I have a modest proposal for the increased support for the use of embyonic stem cells in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

You should impregante your wife and then harvet the stem cells from the embryo. This, I feel, would demonstrate to the whole world your total commitment to the cause of embryonic stem cell research. I would also propose that you video tape the entire procedure and make it available on the internet.

Second I would propose that to further the cause of tissue and organ transplants, you might want to consider harveting some organs from one of your four children and then donate them to a worth canidate.

I think there are great opportunities available for you to promote those worthy causes you are involved in. I stand ready to assist you at any opportunity.

Yours truly,

Wonder if the defamatory Michael J. Fox ad will air against Cardin? Of course, not. He's a liberal Democrat. Fox is using his illness to attack only Republican candidates. He and the candidates whom he is backing should be utterly ashamed of this blatant deception of voters. Stem cell research is not outlawed anywhere in the US. Private research can fund it and pursue it. Embryonic stem cell research has not been found to cure anything, and in fact, the latest findings indicate it may cause brain tumors. If that occurred, those on the Left would be faulting the government for allowing the procedure without enough trials. You just can't win with these people.

Congratulations to the Steele campaign for being on top of this issue.

Steele's campaign is without a doubt the best run campaign in the nation.

I'm not a doctor...
But I think I've read (and heard on TV) of a method by which one cell
can be taken from one of the developmental stages when there are
like 8 or 16 cells...
and the organism appears to develop normally to full term.
(I suppose that's on mice or rats).

Thus, you get a whole organism, with embryonic stem cells for cloning.

BUT...I think I heard one critic say this isn't that simple.

Myself...I'm glad one of my 8 or 16 cells wasn't grabbed when
I was just a speck.
I've had enough trouble in life even with all my cells!

He could be talking about the same thing Bush okayed funding for - research on stem cell lines from embryoes that had already been killed, but not on any further lines where other life would be sacrificed.
