Jeffrey Lundgren is executed

10:31 a.m.

Lucasville -- The state executed Jeffrey Lundgren this morning for killing a family of five in Kirtland in 1989.

Lundgren was pronounced dead at 10:26 a.m., 24 minutes after corrections officials began placing shunts into his arm for the chemicals used in lethal injection.

Lundgren, a cult leader who said Bible passages told him to kill the family, made a brief statement before he was executed.

"I want to profess my love for God, my family, my children and my beloved Kathryn. I am because you are." The reference was to Kathryn Johnson, his wife and the mother of his daughter.

After the chemicals were pumped into his arm, he heaved a puff of air, his eyelids fluttered and he was still.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to accept his last appeal a little more than an hour before the execution, and Gov. Bob Taft denied Lundgren's request for clemency.

Lundgren wanted to stay his execution pending a lawsuit challenging the state's lethal injection method as cruel. A U.S. District Court judge stayed the execution last week so that Lundgren could join the lawsuit, but a three-judge panel from the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that decision Monday night. The Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal.

It was the Lundgren case that brought Steve LaTourette to prominence.

'Bout time. We kept this scumbag alive for 17 years too long.

They should have executed him right in the middle of Florida Field during Gator Growl.

He has stayed alive by appealing for 16 years. That is too long. Any unsuccessful appeal started after 3 years should mean that the lawyer joins the defendant on death row (loser pays, or "you bet your life"). When all appeals are exhausted, family or friends of the victims should be allowed to choose a more convincing method of execution for the criminal and any qualified lawyers. Lethal injection is too easy to fake, and too painless to the criminal. Hanging was accepted when the constitution was written so it should be perfectly OK (and the rope can be reused!).

Why does it take so long to execute such a scumbag? I mean, 24 minutes is way too long. Oh, wait! 17 years!?

Please remember the family of the victims in your prayers. Everyday they live with the grief and horror that this animal caused.

Victims: Dennis Avery, Cheryl Avery, Trina, Rebecca and Karen

The information below is from Rick Ross' website on cults.

The bodies of Dennis Avery, 49; his wife, Cheryl, 46; and their daughters, Trina, 15, Rebecca, 13, and Karen, 7, were found in makeshift graves, covered with quicklime, stones and dirt.

just read about the last executions in Britain; the murder was committed in April 1964 and the hanging was carried out in August the same year.

No executions since 1964. Not no murders.

Just read this guy's bio - similar to Koresh.

"Danny Rolling is next here in FL for the Gainsville murders in 1994."

I think those murders occurred in 1990. He's WAY overdue to be executed. I'm gladly awaiting this execution. This monster has no right to live and breathe.

So while Lundgren took 17 years, Britain hasn't executed a murderer in 42 years?

I guess you were supporting America's current process?

as an aside, I think Japan had kept someone on deathrow for around 42 years or so - he died before being executed.

I'm one of those on FR who doesn't support the death penalty.
