WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.
Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.
"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.
Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.
The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.
West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.
"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

" As I stated earlier, somebody needs to give a rational and legal justification for West Point to discriminate against Muslims."
9/11 How's that !
BUMP!
the difference there is - african americans were discriminated against in this country. there was no "false guilt" like there is regarding islam in america.
Nothing spells defeat quite like teaching the enemy your tactics and how to use your technology.
" As I stated earlier, somebody needs to give a rational and legal justification for West Point to discriminate against Muslims."
There's sometimes a difference between legal, and rational.
They won't. Didn't at least one loyal muslim officer "frag" fellow officers in saudi?
Guilt in America is epidemic these days -- guilt about being the most successful nation in world history, guilt about being the world's only current superpower, guilt about our high standard of living, white/Judeo-Christian guilt being taught at those leftist indoctrination centers called "schools", etc. Overwhelming guilt, and the result is a form of political correctness that verges on the suicidal.
I agree, you said it all right there!!
Oh wow..
A single-person jet decided to "hijack" himself. Nice try.
There is just a bit of differnce between what an A-10 carries and what a B-52 can carry.
No, it's downright scary.
Who cares about what is illegal. We are at war with Islam for pete's sake. PC and what is legal outside the military should have NOTHING to do with the military. That is what causes soldiers to be dead, that is what causes soldiers to worry more about being PC and NOT shooting a terrorists when they need to. They have been made to worry more about what the media will say, what the left will say back here at home. And that is just plain wrong.
I'm not certain what the big deal is. If American Muslims want to sign up and defend civilization against the jihadists, more power to them. Somebody has to set the standard.
Think about why we are in Iraq fighting alongside Muslims, giving them training and so forth to fight the fascists.
What distinguishes the muslims is that their 'holy book' tells them to destroy the infidel (meaning you and I ... well at least I, and 98% of Americans), and it tells them that it is OK to lie and deceive to reach their end goal of domination. That makes them unique amongst any of the other religions. Although I know Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to salvation -- I don't have a problem with Hindis or Buddhists or Taoists or etc ... because as near as I can tell they don't have any doctrines that will destroy their host country.
I grant you that the great majority of muslims don't follow their 'holy book', and their immediate aims are to get along and be 'decent folks'. Nonetheless, they will not deny their foundational book -- and therefore they are ticking timebombs... Thus, I agree with the contention that its a bad idea to admit muslims (be they of Arab, European, or whatever, ancestry) into West Point.
At least we now know what you do for a living........
You are a lawyer.
Really, on the common sense level...does this make sense to you?
WTF over?
again, the WWII model is the correct one.
sure, we can be friendly with the peaceful muslims - both in the US and abroad. the same way we are friendly with the japanese and germans today. but that friendship occurs AFTER we have used war to defeat the radical elements in their societies, which are a significant percentage of their ranks and geopolitical power structure, and who make it plain that they wish to see the United States destroyed.
I'll support your position - tell me how we can screen these west point entrants to determine if they are not radicals? or, are you going to tell me we don't have the right to do that either - that the constitution offers protection to an american citizen who is perhaps an Al Qaeda or Hamas member. could we use that fact to exclude one of them from West Point? or can't we discriminate on that basis?
you want these muslims admitted to west point - fine, I want detailed FBI background checks on each and every one of them before that happens. I want the NSA tapping their phones. can we do that?
Ok thanks.
