French police face 'permanent intifada'
By JAMEY KEATEN, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 15 minutes ago
On a routine call, three unwitting police officers fell into a trap. A car darted out to block their path, and dozens of hooded youths surged out of the darkness to attack them with stones, bats and tear gas before fleeing. One officer was hospitalized, and no arrests made.
The recent ambush was emblematic of what some officers say has become a near-perpetual and increasingly violent conflict between police and gangs in tough, largely immigrant French neighborhoods that were the scene of a three-week paroxysm of rioting last year.
One small police union claims officers are facing a "permanent intifada." Police injuries have risen in the year since the wave of violence.
National police reported 2,458 cases of violence against officers in the first six months of the year, on pace to top the 4,246 cases recorded for all of 2005 and the 3,842 in 2004. Firefighters and rescue workers have also been targeted and some now receive police escorts in such areas.
On Sunday, a band of about 30 youths, some wearing masks, forced passengers out of a bus in a southern Paris suburb in broad daylight Sunday, set it on fire, then stoned firefighters who came to the rescue, police said. No one was injured. Two people were arrested, one of them a 13-year-old, according to LCI television.
More broadly, worsening violence in France testifies to Europe's growing struggle to integrate its ethnic minorities. Some mainstream European politicians adopting positions previously confined largely to far-right fringes are suggesting that the minorities themselves are not doing enough to adapt to European mores.
In Britain, former Foreign Minister Jack Straw, now leader of the House of Commons,

We are talking about the French right?
I don't know if those 2 elements come into play here.
Don't know. However the muslims are chanting we're number 1, by acting like number 2.
It worked in Spain, it can work here!
European (and American) leftists have successfully relegated common sense to the far-right fringe... it's past time to ostracize the far lefties and let common sense reign again.
Eurabia, we hardly knew ye.
I agree The French should surrender and submit to the rusty knife head-ectomy they have coming!
Your comment is over the top, and vile!
BTW - just how many Legionnaires do you think it would take...?
"Larger, more mainstream police unions sharply disagree that the suburban unrest has any religious basis."
Because they are absolutely terrified to think about it actually being true.
Seems to me that the French are in the middle of a Civil War.....largely immigrant French neighborhoods
Civil War is in sight if illegial immigrants keep flooding our population. No more is America a melting pot... ethnic neighborhoods are being run by hoodlums who think they have nothing to lose while they defend their ill gotten ground.
Evidently the police in France--and in the U.K. as well--have been told that they should not use their weapons to defend themselves.
This is preposterous. A deliberate attack on the police represents a complete breakdown of law and order. This is not some drunk getting angry and losing his head. This is a deliberate ambush.
They should shoot all the perpetrators the next time this happens, or there will cease to be any control at all over the violence.
The same thing is happening in England. There are areas where the police don't dare to go, because their lives are at risk and they are not allowed to defend themselves.
I cannot think of a stupider policy or one more likely to lead to disaster.
But if the police shoot the attackers, it will just make the attackers hate them and want to do violence......
You cannot escalate violence ---- unless you intend to WIN.
Can we count on the French to fight to victory?
If the Muz want Sarkozy elected this is the way to accomplish it.
hey OF........go buy the book. Wink!
Won't help. One word: Palestinians.
They are already in a position where they must either win or die.
I think you need to draw the line at the preservation of law and order. Once mobs get the idea that the police will not act, no matter what they do, then there is no longer any law or order.
If the government loses control, there are two possible outcomes. One is that the Muslims will take over France and the rest of Europe, which I am afraid is the likelier outcome.
The other is that ordinary people will take the law into their own hands, and you will have lynch mobs and civil war. We like to joke on FR about the French habit of surrendering, but the past has shown that when you drive Europeans past a certain point, watch out. Possibly they are now too decadent now to take such a path, but I don't see Europe going down without a struggle, in at least some countries. If the police refuse to act, then you will have anarchy sooner or later.
In truth....the French must learn from our experiences and approach to a similar situation:
Fallujah.
"We thought the French had already surrendered, so we didn't bother to put a line up."
You are correct, but to see the faces of these buttwipes if those French cops had come out of the car with automatic weapons smoking would have been worth a lot.
