Evidently the police in France--and in the U.K. as well--have been told that they should not use their weapons to defend themselves.

This is preposterous. A deliberate attack on the police represents a complete breakdown of law and order. This is not some drunk getting angry and losing his head. This is a deliberate ambush.

They should shoot all the perpetrators the next time this happens, or there will cease to be any control at all over the violence.

The same thing is happening in England. There are areas where the police don't dare to go, because their lives are at risk and they are not allowed to defend themselves.

I cannot think of a stupider policy or one more likely to lead to disaster.

But if the police shoot the attackers, it will just make the attackers hate them and want to do violence......

You cannot escalate violence ---- unless you intend to WIN.
Can we count on the French to fight to victory?

"I cannot think of a stupider policy or one more likely to lead to disaster."

The policy that led them there in the first place!

Or perhaps it's somebody's plan to allow things to spiral to a point where the French populace will agree to the most drastic measures
