Schwarzenegger Story Gets Another Rewrite
LAT ^ | Oct. 21, 2006 | Peter Nicholas

His approval rating is up to 56%, according to the latest Los Angeles Times poll, a rise of nearly 20 percentage points in one year.

His advisors say they still worry when he speaks in public, wondering if he'll blurt out something that offends a constituency or torpedoes a policy position his administration spent months crafting.

Every year the California Chamber of Commerce, the state's leading business lobbying group, puts out a list of what it calls "job killer bills" — legislation it wants defeated. Of 11 such bills that passed the Legislature and made it to the governor's desk this year, he vetoed nine, or 82%.

Schwarzenegger backed four measures that his allies placed on the November 2005 ballot: He wanted to curb state spending, revamp the way the state draws voting districts, make it tougher for teachers to get tenure and bar unions from making campaign contributions without permission from members. The agenda wasn't even his own. It had been cobbled together by the Chamber of Commerce, anti-tax forces and conservative leaders on the fringes of the governor's political circle.

ccg did NOT post all the bills Arnold vetoed...

Correct. A veto advances neither the Democrat nor the Conservative agenda.

The absence of a veto of leftist legislation, i.e. a signature, advances the Democrat agenda.

The record supports Nuñez's summation: "He's been a very reliable partner in advancing a very strong Democratic agenda"

Just because someone is Republican doesn't necessarily mean he's a conservative. Most conservatives are Republicans but not all Republicans are conservatives. Its easy to get the two confused, FO. As I said, neither candidate deserves conservatives' support. We shouldn't betray our beliefs to advance an agenda that we don't think is good for this state and our country.

Please repeat after me: "The choice is Arnold or Angelides". Please why do you consider electing Angelides good for CA and the conservative cause.

I asked who you are voting for, if your drive is simply to defeat the republican then you should speak up.

I keep trying to figure out what your positions are but you won't reveal them, you simply attack the republican governor.

You seem obsessed with politics but, what politics?

I don't consider electing any liberal, no matter what political label he wears, good for CA and the conservative cause. As I said, Arnold has implemented the Democratic agenda far better than a Democrat ever could. The state's top Democrats don't have a beef with him. Why doesn't that concern you, FO? There is no chance Angelides is going to be elected Governor; its already a non-issue. Where Arnold is going ought to be of concern to every conservative in CA.

I'm concerned with not helping liberals. I already told you there are downticket CA Republicans, most good conservatives, who deserve your support and your vote. The silence on them from FR's Arnoldbots has been most telling.

I've answered your questions, over and over.

There are years of posts to see exactly what my politics are -- Conservative... and fiscally VERY conservative.

"fiscally VERY conservative"

====

Sure, that's why you voted against Prop. 76, that would have helped control spending, and that's why you can't bring yourself to vote FOR Arnold, AGAINST Angelides, who plans to raise everyone's taxes by billions.

Sure, that's how a fiscal conservative acts, sure.

You have never answered my questions, don't tell me you have a past, simply tell me who you support for governor.

Neither one. I can't support a liberal and that's obvious to any true conservative. Repetition of this point should be unnecessary. But some people just look at the R beside Arnold's name and forget everything else about the guy.

ahnold is a rino...that is the closet to a republican that will get elected in CA....no he is not a conservative...CA is not going to elect another Reagan!

with that said....it is better that CA has ahnold vetoing drivers licenses for illegals...which actually effects and helps all of the US by not having these invaders use them as valid govt. ID.....he also has vetoed some gay/lesbian bills....more than can be said for the great state of Taxachusetts!!!

as stated....ahnold is not a conservative but it he is still light years better than the alternative!!!!!

I hear the same arguments from all those "Stay Home Republicans" who insist they will only vote for conservatives. Here's another way to look at it.

I happen to be lucky...I live in a southern state where my GOP candidates are true conservatives.

But some choose to live in liberal states where conservatives are a distinct minority. In those states (and nationally), conservative numbers will never add up to a majority. In order to advance their agenda, they have no choice but to align with RINO and libertarians to cobble together a big tent majority. The best we can hope for is to advance SOME of the agenda each year. It's a political reality.

But that's not good enough for the stay-homers. They insist on conservative purity, even though it will never become the governing majority in their state (or in national politics). There just aren't enough of them. I look at what the nutrooters are doing to Joe Lieberman and it reminds me of the stay-homers. Purity before winning. They fail to realize that, by driving the moderates out of their party, they move it more and more into the minority status.

I happen to be among the half-a-loaf crowd. Give me half a loaf vs liberal government any day. Especially at a time when liberals will so imperil our national security. Liberals learned long ago to bide their time and advance their cause one baby step at a time. After 60 years, just look at all they've acheived in the courts, the universities and the media. Like the libs, I'll be satisfied as long as I see conservative principles being applied, even slowly. It sure beats the alternative.

So soon you forget, FO. There were many conservative reasons for voting against Prop 76, remember?
Prop 76 was a sham to mask more borrowing, had less than 50% Republican support, and did nothing to cap spending.

They would have done better eliminating the state income tax. I think a spending cap can be too easily busted. Better remove the spigot that sends such a huge funnel of money into Sacramento.
