ROCHESTER, Oct. 20 Facing a barrage of questions about her national ambitions during the first Senate debate on Friday night, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton firmly maintained that she was focused on her work in Congress and had made no decisions about running for president.
But her Republican opponent seized on her aspirations at every opening, accusing her of already abdicating her responsibilities to New York.
In a lively but cordial hour of exchanges, Mrs. Clinton steered toward substantive answers about foreign and domestic policy, and was sharply critical of the Bush administrations handling of the war in Iraq.
One of the most spirited exchanges came when she repeated her call for President Bush to replace Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.
You know, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln did not hesitate to change generals, Mrs. Clinton said, drawing applause from the audience at the University of Rochester auditorium.
Youre not president yet, Mrs. Clinton, her opponent, John Spencer, the former mayor of Yonkers, shot back, noting that Lincoln was the president, not a senator, when he made critical decisions about that war.

I don't suppose that Spencer challenged her on four fraudulent campaign finance reports and failure to declare 721K, did he?
"Will you guarantee all of us," asked newsman Craig Cannon on Oct. 15, 1990, "that if re-elected, there is absolutely, positively no way that you'll run for any other political office and that you'll serve out your term in full?""You bet," Clinton declared. "I told you when I announced for governor I intended to run, and that's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna serve four years. I made that decision when I decided to run. I'm being considered for as a candidate for governor. That's the job I want. That's the job I'll do for the next four years."
Very excellent comeback. I hope this guy makes a good showing in Nov.
He won't win, obviously. But it would be real nice if he was good enough that plenty of people show up to vote against Hillary...her "mandate" won't look so good.
John Spencer is an excellent candidate, a good Conservative who will have my vote on Election Day.
Against all odds, with virtually no support from the GOP he has run a good campaign, and campaigned with humor, reason, and passion.
Hillary is a PIAPS, but the suit is empty. She is a celebrity, thats it. A mediocre Senator, a less than mediocre speaker and debater, I can't fathom her appeal.
Hillary:
- Flunked her Bar exam in DC - had to fix it in AK
- Turned down by MENSA in 1992 with Slick Willie
Her shirt is appropriate in that TV capture......
I hope he makes a good showing.
Did she really flunk the DC bar? I know you can waive into DC if you pass in another state, at least in 1990 you could.
What work? Would have been nice if Spencer could have asked her about that, because other than going on an eight month book tour and spending taxpayer cash, this vile witch has done absolutely NOTHING!
She was turned down by MENSA but accepted by MENTAL.
John Spencer needs to ask Senator Clinton during the second debate exactly what legislation truly has her name on it as the main sponsor during her entire duration as a U.S. Senator, and why it was appropriate for President Bill Clinton to pardon the people that he did pardon including pardoning some Puerto Rican terrorists? How can she really try to "move to the right politically" on terrorist issues when her own husband pardoned some Puerto Rican terrorists while he was President? Senator Clinton also needs to explain once again all about her "Gandhi working at a gas station" comment that she gave a couple of years back. Senator Clinton has so much negative political baggage upon her that it would truly take several hours just to get through it all!
It would be nice if he could get her on the record on Abortion, Immigration, the Death Penalty, and Gay Marriage.
Triangulate that!
Add 2nd amendment to that list.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." -Manuel II Paleologus
New York is a very liberal state, and too many N.Y. voters love Senator Clinton. In fact, both N.Y. U.S. Senators are quite high on the "liberal sleaze meter".
