Indianapolis - A year ago Julia Carson was bidding farewell to Rosa Parks, an African American pioneer she believes paved the way for her by refusing to give up her seat. Now with a decade of political service in Congress, it's Carson fighting to stay put.
"I am a very optimistic person," she said. "I don't believe in failure."
In an exclusive WTHR People's Agenda Poll, Carson is trailing Republican Eric Dickerson.
Of the 468 voters polled in the Seventh Congressional District, 45 percent say they would vote for Eric Dickerson. Carson polls 42 percent. Four-percent would chose someone else and nine percent just aren't sure.
Incumbent Democrat Julia Carson is not letting those numbers bother her, saying "I was born down in the polls. People didn't think that I would ever, ever have the unmitigated gall to be a member of the United States Congress."
Republican challenger Eric Dickerson says the numbers substantiate his efforts. "It's just another confirmation," he said, "that our campaign is very, very serious and we do intend to win this race."
Despite a 4-point margin of error, and Carson's history of proving polls wrong, her camp isn't about to dismiss the results. Numbers that also show her approval rating on the slide.
42 percent of the respondents approve of Carson's job performance, while 49-percent disapprove. Another 9-percent couldn't say one way or the other.
Those numbers did not escape Dickerson's notice. "If I were an incumbent and had ten years of service and were hearing nearly half the people are not satisfied with my performance I would take it very, very seriously."
Dickerson isn't getting too excited. He says a lot can happen in just 20 days.
Julia Carson, who has been in this position before, outlined her plans for the rest of the campaign. "We will remind the voters of what we have done and what we will continue to try to accomplish." she said.
A total of 85 percent of those polled live inside the Indianapolis city limits, which has traditionally been Julia Carson's base.
Both camps see Center Township as the proving ground and, as Dickerson put it, if you can't get 50 percent of the vote out of Center Township, you can't win the 7th.
She always does seem to find 20-30% of her vote total in the final hours of counting every election.

For the local Naptown Dems to turn on her ought to put the fear of God into all the others.

Well winning the seventh will help ease the pain if we do lose the 8th. The 2nd and 9th will be tight races as well and could serve as an early bellweather for the rest of the country.
IF she's only 4% up with this small a sample, and you apply the LS rule (add 5% to the GOP, subtract 5% from the Dem and you have an accurate election day result), she's in deep trouble.
IF Julia Carson could even POSSIBLY be in trouble then the you have to question the entire ratmedia house of cards on this election.
Let's not break out the champaign just yet BUT THIS IS BIG, VERY BIG if it is even near accurate.
Carson is an embarassment, but IMO she has this job until she wants to quit. It's a liberal district; competence is not a quality they seek in a representative.
One democrat I know says he'll be sitting out the election this year because the democrats are "nuts." Another democrat says he'll be voting for the republican candidate in the governor race because the rat governor has wrecked the state's economy.
THere are hundreds of races that haven't really been polled.
But national polls show that CONGRESS has a miserable approval rating, and that's for both democrats and republicans.
Of course, there are more republican incumbents, but it amazes me that no news organizations seem to consider that DEMOCRAT incumbents could also be swept up in the "throw the bums out" mentality.
Which is good for us, because while EVERY republican knows what is coming if they don't turn out and vote, a LOT of democrats are sitting around thinking all is well and good for them.
This is stunning news. the Dems ought to be in a panic when one of their own, in a Demo district, is trailing! All we are hearing from the national pundits is how many GOP seats are going to be lost. If Carson gets dumped it will be a blow towards their efforts to take a majority. Mr Dickerson is black also. He would become the only black Republican in the House I think. And we can hope Mike Steele gets elected to the Senate.
So this is very encouraging. Rep. Pelosi shouldn't plan a move to the speaker's office just yet.
I can't find anything about this race in any of the big news polling websites. All of the vulnerable incumbents are republicans.
How strange
NY Slimes and CQ election preview pages both list the seat as leaning Dem, i think. Remarkable considering Kerry won the district with 58%. Perhaps they will have to shift that to a tossup status now. Carson must be very weak. She looks about 100 years old. Maybe she is hurt also by the news a few years ago that her grandson was involved in a hate crime against a gay man.
Wasn't there a famous football player named Eric Dickerson? Maybe some voters are mixing him up with this GOP candidate. ;)
You guys seen this one ? I find it dubious that Carson could lose in her 'Rat gerrymandered seat, but this could be a pleasant surprise.
Now if we can get them to vote Republican...praying....
