Breaking News from the NewsChannel 11 newsroom. NewsChannel 11 is on the scene of an apparent tank explosion in northeast Lubbock. The Lubbock Fire Department tells NewsChannel 11 that the explosion happened at Harmon Tank Company, at 1800 East Broadway. Reports are that at least three people are injured. But emergency crews are working to account for all Harmon employees. We are told an explosion inside a building has also damaged at least three other surrounding buildings. Parts of a tank are confirmed several blocks away. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area near 4th Street and Guava Avenue. Stay with NewsChannel 11 for the very latest. |

There are reports that it was heard and/or felt near Tech and all the way to Idalou and the Strip (pretty much the entire east half of Lubbock from North to South--we're talking a 15 mile radius?)

PS: there is a report on another board from someone at 69th & Frankford (way down in SW Lubbock), that they heard it and thought it was "thunder". same thread reports that someone in a building downtown felt the building "sway".

Someone tried to cut into a tank from which the explosive vapors had not been purged? That'd be my bet. I know a guy who did that with the gas tank of a 50' sport fishing boat. He survived. The boat didn't.

That's what it sounds like to me. It's too cold and windy here today for a spark to have flown too far.

check this out, snipped from a kcbd.com update
The explosion could be heard and felt from miles away. NewsChannel 11 newsroom took calls from concerned citizens most of the morning. A Lubbock Police Sgt. reported the blast lifted the floor of the Lubbock Police Department.

Thanks for the posting the map.
Trivia - I see Texas Tech University is in that area.
I'm not familiar with Texas.
I learn something new everyday.
