Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Oh I never planned to do do other than vote GOP across the board.

What I'm doing is pointing out the fact that from time to time Rush is a flaming hypocrit.

He seriously offended me when he went on that anti-Dubya tear a couple of years ago and I'm not going to forget it completely.

Rush must shoulder at least some of the blame for the conservative dissatisfaction with the GOP, which is in part attributable his Bush-bashing tear.

And Rush isn't alone.

Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage — both Free Republic icons — contributed their share too.

I did see a report that Ginsburg was falling asleep during court sessions.

Hopefully she stayed that way until after they voted. But probably not. I would imagine the rest of them felt that they had to wake her......

I see SCOTUS retirements after November elections, no matter who wins. Just another reason for 'stay at home conservatives' to get a reality check and vote. Remember that that SCOTUS liberals voted that the government can TAKE YOUR PROPERTY from you and give them to developers. Want more of that?

Where do you live... in the US? Doesn't understand the dynamics? What the hell are you talking about? This isn't a purity of the party game... when we're nuked or hold our heads in our hands we can't vote or moan about values... unless you look forward to Sharia.

On the other hand... maybe we should 'teach them a lesson' a la Clinton; They can pull the troops out (Al Q would love that), continue to place the lib judges (who give terrorists and illegals more rights than you), Socialistic healthcare (to be followed by our own Groningen Protocol, get rid of the elderly, disabled... their lives aren't productive, along with the abortions), do I have to mention taxes and the killing of all things religious (except for Islam and relativism), not to mention the schools and further indoctrination (sex, feminizing boys, no red pencil, no wrong or right).

BTW, who's the conservative leaning democrat you mentioned?

How about just go to the voting booth and vote for whomever is more conservative.. sure, you may be voting for a RINO, but you are still voting for the more conservative of the two..

I challenge anyone to find a race in this country where the democrat candidate is truly more conservative than the Republican- even with the worst Rs we have...

However, that has nothing to do with the point I made, and I think you know it.

I guess I don't think that Rush will stand up for McCain because he won't have to. Guiliani will get the nomination if people are okay having someone with Lib tendencies over McCain. The only nomination McCain may possibly get is the Independent.

For the record - I will never, ever, under any circumstances, vote for McCain - regardless of how much invective the GOP kool-aid drinkers spew.

You and I are in agreement here.

The typical American household has a net worth of $465,970, up 83% from 1965, 60% from 1985 and 35% from 1995."

Makes me think the writer might not know the meaning of "net worth."

He talks about increasing house prices, but most young people are in hoc for those houses, and they would add almost nothing to their "net worth" (i.e. assets minus liabilities.)

What anti-Bush tear was he on? Bush not being "conservative enough"? Bush would be the first to admit he's "not conservative enough". Hell, I knew that even when he debated Al Gore three times.

And in other news, the UN will impose more useless sanctions to 'teach them a lesson'.

What do you suggest be done by the U.S., Mr Sarcastic?

It's easy for you to be a smart-mouth....... tell the world and Free Republic what we should do!

Exactly. There is no evidence because Foley, scum-bag that he is, STILL did not have sex with a teenage Page. The only one who's said he had sex with Foley, admitted that he was 21 at the time, years ago, and he hadn't been a Page for several years. Compared to several known Democrats who had sex with Page's while they WERE still teenage boys, AND active Page's. But they get a pass. Foley's biggest mistake was being a Republican RINO. If Foley had been a Democrat, no one would have said boo over this. Just like with Studds, and Frank. They were Democrats who had gay sex with minors, so it didn't matter. If Michael Jackson had only run as a Democrat for Congress, he could have had all the juvenile tail he wanted and no one would have said boo. Makes me want to throwup.
